Job Overview: The United Nations Volunteer (UNV) Driver position is crucial for supporting UNDP’s Debris Project in the Gaza Strip, which has been severely impacted by destruction, with over 174,000 damaged structures reported. This role involves providing secure and timely transport for UNDP staff, consultants, and authorized personnel across Gaza, ensuring adherence to security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security protocols, and facilitating logistics for project implementation. The driver will play a vital role in maintaining communication with mission focal points to ensure smooth operations and timely adjustments, while also conducting daily vehicle checks and maintaining accurate logs for fuel consumption and maintenance records. The position requires a commitment to safety and security, as well as flexibility in adapting to the dynamic environment of humanitarian operations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the UNV Driver include:
Providing secure and timely transport for UNDP staff, consultants, and authorized personnel across Gaza.
Ensuring adherence to UNDSS security protocols, especially in low-risk zones.
Facilitating pickups and drop-offs for daily missions, field visits, and inter-agency coordination activities.
Supporting logistics for project implementation, including transport of documents, supplies, and light equipment.
Maintaining communication with mission focal points for smooth operations.
Conducting daily vehicle checks and reporting mechanical issues.
Maintaining accurate logs for fuel consumption, mileage, and maintenance records.
Ensuring vehicles are equipped with required safety items.
Operating only in approved zones with prior UNDSS clearance. 1
Avoiding high-risk areas unless authorized and escorted. 1
Following movement coordination protocols with UNDSS, OCHA, and relevant authorities. 1
Participating in carpooling or vehicle-sharing arrangements when feasible. 1
Extending transport support to other UN entities upon request and approval. 1
Submitting incident reports, fuel logs, and trip summaries to the Operations unit. 1
Assisting in updating vehicle status reports and asset tracking systems. 1
Performing other duties as necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the UNV Driver position include:
A valid driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle type.
Proven experience in driving and vehicle maintenance.
Knowledge of the local area and road conditions in Gaza.
Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
Commitment to the principles of the United Nations and the mission of UNDP.
Educational Background: The educational background required for the UNV Driver position includes:
A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
Additional training or certification in vehicle operation and maintenance is an advantage.
Experience: The level of experience needed for the UNV Driver position includes:
A minimum of 2 years of professional driving experience, preferably in a humanitarian or development context.
Experience working with international organizations or NGOs is desirable.
Languages: The mandatory language for this position is Arabic, as it is essential for communication within the local context. Proficiency in English is also highly desirable, as it facilitates communication with international staff and documentation.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment, and the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging their own housing and other living essentials. The position offers a 12-month contract with the possibility of extensions based on funding availability, operational necessity, and satisfactory performance. A Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) of ILS 6300 is provided monthly to cover housing, utilities, and normal living expenses. Additionally, life, health, and permanent disability insurance are included, covering health insurance for up to 3 dependents, as well as an exit allowance for satisfactory service.
