Job Overview:
The Air Operations Assistant position is crucial for ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient aircraft operations within the UN framework. The role is primarily based in Yei, South Sudan, and involves close coordination with the Air Operations team in Juba. The assistant will be responsible for overseeing ground activities at the airstrip and helipad, ensuring compliance with established UN procedures, and maintaining safety and security protocols. This position is expected to last for six months, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability. The Air Operations Assistant will play a vital role in monitoring airside operations, reporting conditions, and ensuring that only authorized personnel access sensitive areas. The position requires a proactive approach to safety and operational efficiency, making it essential for the successful execution of air operations in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Air Operations Assistant will undertake a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
  • Ensuring the safe and professional conduct of all ground activities on the ramp and airside, including the safety and security of the airstrip and helipad.
  • Monitoring the control of all vehicles, cargo, and personnel movement in the ramp/apron area.
  • Assessing the operational condition of the ramp/apron, runway, taxiway, and lighting systems, and reporting any issues to the Juba Air Operation.
  • Controlling access points to the airside to ensure that only authorized personnel and vehicles gain entry.
  • Detecting and halting unsafe operations on the apron/ramp and reporting any breaches of safety regulations.
  • Attending briefings from the AIROPS Center and updating the Air Traffic Unit (ATU) accordingly.
  • Reporting weather conditions at the landing site to the Mission Air Operations Center (MAOC) and relevant sectors.
  • Managing Foreign Object Debris (FOD) in the airstrip/helipad/apron area.
  • Providing Flight Information Services, including traffic and weather updates, and the status of the airstrip/helipad. 1
  • Maintaining a daily log of all aircraft departures and arrivals, and assisting in Medical and Casualty evacuation flights when necessary. 1
  • Ensuring the serviceability of night landing lights and deploying them during night flights.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent. Additionally, a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in Air Traffic Control, Aerodrome Flight Information Service, Flight Dispatching, or Ramp Management is required. A valid driving license with categories A or B is also necessary. Training in Air Traffic Control, Aerodrome Flight Information Service, Air Transport Pilot, or Flight Dispatching is mandatory. Furthermore, training in Airside Safety Management, Aircraft Marshalling, and Ground Handling Equipment operation is desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is a High School Diploma or an equivalent qualification. This foundational education is essential for understanding the operational and safety protocols necessary for effective air operations management.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have at least five years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields such as Air Traffic Control, Aerodrome Flight Information Service, Flight Dispatching, or Ramp Management. This level of experience is crucial for ensuring that the Air Operations Assistant can effectively manage the complexities of air operations and maintain safety standards.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN, but English fluency is mandatory for effective communication and reporting.
