Interns will engage with the Enhancing Community Resilience and Local Governance Project Phase II (ECRP II), which is funded by the World Bank and managed by the Ministry of Finance and Planning and the Local Government Board in South Sudan. The intern's primary responsibility will be to review and analyze IOM’s contributions towards the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) in South Sudan. This involves producing a scientific report that integrates all ECRP activities and quantifies their contributions relative to the SFDRR’s four priorities. The internship will last for three months, with one month spent in South Sudan and two months working remotely, allowing the intern to gain practical experience in disaster risk management and contribute to meaningful projects that enhance community resilience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and analyzing ongoing ECRP activities to characterize their contributions to the SFDRR.
  • Mapping and documenting completed, ongoing, and planned ECRP activities within the context of the Sendai Framework.
  • Generating high-quality scientific documents, including a comprehensive report, a PowerPoint presentation, and a journal article.
  • Utilizing spreadsheets, GIS, and other spatial mapping tools to support analysis and documentation efforts.
  • Engaging with project stakeholders and participating in site visits to gather relevant information and documentation.
  • Collaborating with IOM staff and advisors to ensure the quality and relevance of the produced materials.
  • Adhering to IOM’s ethical standards and research policies throughout the internship.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical and writing skills, with the ability to produce high-quality scientific documents.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
  • Must demonstrate IOM’s core values of inclusion, integrity, professionalism, courage, and empathy.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should be a student or a recent graduate with a Master’s degree or PhD in Disaster Risk Management, Flood Risk Management, or a related field from an internationally recognized university or research institute. This educational background is essential to ensure that the intern possesses the necessary theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to contribute effectively to the ECRP activities and the overall objectives of the internship.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have less than two years of relevant working experience. This is particularly aimed at students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in the field of disaster risk management and migration. Previous internships or volunteer experiences related to these areas will be considered an asset, but not mandatory.

Languages:
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish. Proficiency in English is mandatory, and candidates will be evaluated on their language skills during the selection process, which may include written and oral assessments. Knowledge of French or Spanish would be considered an advantage, but is not required for this position.

Additional Notes:
The internship will last for three months, with one month spent in South Sudan and two months working remotely. Interns may visit one or two project sites during their time in South Sudan. The working arrangement may be adjusted based on the situation in South Sudan. Interns will receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs, although those receiving financial remuneration or credits from their university or other sponsoring bodies will not be eligible for this stipend. IOM covers interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan, free of charge, for the duration of the assignment. However, interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accidents or illnesses.
