Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a leading intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. Established in 1951, IOM has grown to include over 173 member states and operates in more than 100 countries worldwide. The organization focuses on various aspects of migration, including humanitarian assistance, development, and policy advocacy, ensuring that migration contributes positively to the development of individuals and communities. IOM is committed to fostering a workplace culture that values diversity, inclusion, and respect for all employees, enabling them to thrive professionally while working towards harnessing the full potential of migration.

Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is designed to attract talented students and recent graduates who have a keen interest in migration-related issues and possess relevant academic backgrounds. Interns will engage in significant projects, particularly focusing on the Enhancing Community Resilience and Local Governance Project Phase II (ECRP II), which is funded by the World Bank. This project aims to improve access to services, strengthen flood resilience, and enhance institutional capacity for local service delivery and integrated disaster risk management. Interns will be involved in conducting large-scale dike breach analysis, utilizing historical water level data and georeferenced dike infrastructure data to generate scientific reports. The role requires collaboration with the IOM team to gather necessary information and conduct analyses using open-earth observation datasets. The ultimate goal is to develop effective flood preparedness and response strategies, including evacuation plans, to protect vulnerable communities in Rubkona county.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will be responsible for conducting large-scale dike breach analysis, which includes estimating flood hazards, assessing risks, and mapping vulnerabilities. They will analyze historical data to understand the mechanisms and potential consequences of dike failures, which is crucial for effective flood risk management. Interns will also design evacuation strategies for large-scale dike breaches, ensuring that communities are prepared for potential disasters. Deliverables include high-quality scientific reports, presentations, and journal articles that will serve as decision support tools for the IOM and its partners. Interns will utilize tools such as HEC-RAS, HEC-FDA, GIS, and other spatial mapping tools to analyze and present their findings.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. They should possess a strong academic background in hydraulics engineering, hydro informatics, civil engineering, hydrology, or a related discipline. Experience in dike or dam break analysis using hydrodynamic models is essential. Interns should demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively in a coordinated manner, taking on shared responsibilities while also being capable of independent work when necessary.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidates for this internship should be students or recent graduates with a Master's or PhD degree in relevant fields such as hydraulics engineering, hydro informatics, civil engineering, hydrology, or related disciplines. This educational background is crucial as it provides the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for conducting complex analyses related to dike breach and flood risk management.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have some level of experience, preferably in the form of internships or academic projects related to hydrodynamic modeling, flood risk assessment, or disaster risk management. While less than two years of relevant working experience is acceptable, familiarity with dike or dam break analysis will be highly advantageous.

Languages:
A thorough knowledge of the English language, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. This proficiency is essential for effective communication, report writing, and collaboration with the IOM team and other stakeholders involved in the project. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.

Additional Notes:
The internship will last for three months and will be conducted remotely, allowing flexibility in work arrangements. Interns will receive support from the IOM DRM team, which will provide necessary information and guidance throughout the internship. Candidates should be aware that any offer made is subject to funding confirmation and that they must be medically fit for appointment. Interns may receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs, but those receiving financial remuneration or credits from their university or other sponsoring bodies will not be eligible for this stipend. IOM covers interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan, but does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational incidents. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance and must provide proof of coverage before starting work. IOM maintains a zero-tolerance policy on conduct incompatible with its aims and objectives, including discrimination and harassment.
