Job Overview:
The Innovative Nuclear Technology Transport Safety Specialist is a key role within the IAEA's Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, specifically within the Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety. This position focuses on the safe transport of radioactive materials and advanced nuclear technologies. The specialist will be responsible for developing and reviewing international safety standards and guidance, advising Member States and international organizations on improving safety in the transport of radioactive materials, and implementing complex technical assistance projects. The role requires a deep understanding of nuclear safety regulations and the ability to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to enhance safety standards globally. The specialist will also engage in training and capacity-building activities to ensure that Member States can effectively implement these standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop, review, and revise safety standards and technical documents related to the safe transport of radioactive materials and advanced nuclear technologies, ensuring they reflect international consensus and state-of-the-art knowledge.
  • Provide expert advice to Member States and international organizations to achieve harmonized application of international regulations for the safe transport of radioactive materials.
  • Strengthen forums to increase awareness of topical issues related to the safe transport of radioactive materials among Member States and relevant international organizations.
  • Plan, organize, and lead complex technical meetings in the area of Transport Safety, facilitating discussions and guiding policy makers.
  • Manage projects related to the Transport Regulations, including training and database management.
  • Collaborate with experts from Member States and international organizations to foster a culture of safety in the transport of radioactive materials.

Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced university degree in nuclear science, nuclear technology, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline. A first-level university degree in these fields plus two years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the advanced degree.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in safety assessments related to the transport of radioactive materials or nuclear power plants.
  • Demonstrable participation in the development and/or application of IAEA safety standards related to transport and nuclear installations.
  • Proven ability to prepare high-quality technical documents and establish effective working relationships with IAEA staff and representatives of Member States.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in nuclear science, nuclear technology, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in these fields combined with two years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary technical knowledge and understanding of nuclear safety and transport regulations.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in safety assessments, specifically related to the transport of radioactive materials or nuclear power plants. Candidates should have demonstrable experience in the development and application of IAEA safety standards, as well as a proven track record in preparing technical documents of high quality. Experience in managing complex technical assistance projects and engaging with policy makers is also essential.

Languages:
Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $86,027, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance.
