The EUROBATS Secretariat operates under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), which is a global intergovernmental treaty focused on the conservation and sustainable use of migratory species and their habitats. The CMS was established to promote international cooperation in the protection of migratory species, and it has been instrumental in the adoption of various intergovernmental instruments aimed at conserving these species. The CMS Secretariat, located in Bonn, Germany, also supports several regional agreements, including ASCOBANS, AEWA, and EUROBATS, which further enhance conservation efforts for specific groups of migratory species. The organization is dedicated to fostering collaboration among its 39 Parties and aims to protect 55 bat species across Europe. The CMS Secretariat employs a diverse team of professionals and operates in multiple countries, working towards a common goal of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Job Overview:

The intern will play a crucial role in supporting the Secretariat's communication and outreach initiatives, which are essential for raising awareness about the conservation of migratory species, particularly bats. The intern will engage in various activities, including the preparation of communication content for the EUROBATS website and social media channels, assisting with the International Bat Night campaign, and supporting the logistical preparations for meetings and events. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in an international organization while contributing to meaningful conservation efforts.   • The intern will work closely with the EUROBATS Executive Secretary and other team members, gaining insights into the operations of an international treaty organization and the importance of effective communication in conservation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks that support the EUROBATS Secretariat's mission. These duties include: assisting in the development and implementation of communication and outreach activities; supporting the maintenance of EUROBATS social media channels; preparing communication content for the EUROBATS website, including drafting articles, news items, and event announcements; assisting with the International Bat Night campaign by updating website content and coordinating with event organizers; disseminating information materials and publications; preparing templates and formatting official documents; assisting in the logistical preparation for the 10th Session of the meeting of the Parties; maintaining and updating contact lists and databases; and performing any other tasks as requested by the Secretariat. The intern's contributions will be vital in enhancing the visibility and impact of EUROBATS' conservation efforts.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria at the time of application: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree and must commence the internship within one year of graduation. Preferred areas of study include communications, media studies, public relations, journalism, social sciences, and environmental studies. Candidates should possess competencies in website content management, social media content preparation, graphic design, video editing, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Strong attention to detail and a keen interest in environmental issues are also highly desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or being enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program, or having completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. program. The preferred fields of study are those closely related to communications, media, public relations, journalism, social sciences, and environmental studies, as these areas align with the responsibilities of the internship and the mission of the EUROBATS Secretariat.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not a requirement for applicants to the UN Internship Programme, candidates should have a field of study that is closely related to the internship. The internship is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and contribute to the work of the EUROBATS Secretariat, and a demonstrated interest in wildlife conservation and international relations is highly valued. Previous experience in relevant areas, such as communications or environmental advocacy, will be considered an asset but is not mandatory.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship, as it is the working language of the EUROBATS Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's application. Strong writing skills and the ability to draft news articles and social media posts for a general audience are also desired.
