Job Overview:
The Digital Archive AI Engineer position is a strategic role within UNRWA's Digital Impact, Technology and Innovation Department (DITID). The individual in this role will be responsible for guiding the adoption and integration of advanced artificial intelligence solutions across UNRWA’s digital initiatives. This includes providing expert oversight for the implementation of innovative AI technologies, ensuring that these technologies align with organizational objectives and adhere to industry-leading security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security standards. The Digital Officer will work closely with the Head of Application Development Section and Lead Architect, as well as collaborate with various teams within DITID, to direct the execution of the Digital Archives project and provide strategic counsel for additional development activities. The role requires a proactive approach to managing the end-to-end product lifecycle, from discovery and roadmap planning to delivery and iteration, ensuring that all products meet quality, security, and performance standards while aligning with business goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Digital Archive AI Engineer include leading the end-to-end product lifecycle, overseeing the development of mobile and web applications using React Native for the front-end, Python/Django for middleware, and Dynamics365 for the backend. The engineer will guide the design and implementation of scalable RESTful APIs and integrations, ensuring product quality and alignment with business goals. Responsibilities also include providing technical direction, reviewing deliverables, mentoring cross-functional development teams, troubleshooting product issues, prioritizing backlog items, and driving continuous improvement. The engineer will prepare product documentation, release notes, and stakeholder communications, deliver regular progress updates, and lead agile ceremonies across teams. Additionally, the engineer may be assigned other duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, AI, or a related discipline. Alternatively, a relevant first-level university degree combined with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A minimum of 5 years of experience in data science, software development, AI development, or technical roles is required. Proven experience in using LLMs, Azure Foundry, or similar platforms is essential, along with hands-on experience in managing, training, fine-tuning, and enhancing AI integrations using appropriate LLM models. Candidates should have experience building AI agents and automations, familiarity with AI workflow tools such as n8n, and a solid understanding of Azure and AI cost awareness. Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills are also necessary.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in fields such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, AI, or other related disciplines. In cases where candidates hold a relevant first-level university degree, they must also have two years of qualifying experience to be considered for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in data science, software development, AI development, or other technical roles. Candidates should have a proven track record of using LLMs, Azure Foundry, or similar platforms, as well as hands-on experience in managing and enhancing AI systems. Experience in leading and mentoring development teams, as well as working directly with senior leadership to shape AI strategy and roadmap, is also essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as English and Arabic are the working languages of UNRWA. While knowledge of Arabic is considered an advantage, it is not a mandatory requirement for this role.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is based in UNRWA HQA in Amman, Jordan. The selected candidate will receive a monthly remuneration equivalent to P3 Step 1, amounting to $7,924.25 for each fully completed month. The duration of the contract is up to 12 months, with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of funds, continuing need, and satisfactory performance. The role operates under the overall supervision of the Head of Software Development and Solutions Architecture Section. It is important to note that the United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, including application, interview, processing, or training.
