Job Overview:
The Unit Head for the Assessment and Management of Releases is a pivotal role within the IAEA's Department of Nuclear Safety and Security. This position involves leading a specialized unit that focuses on the assessment and management of radioactive releases to the environment. The Unit Head is responsible for developing and coordinating programs that enhance the quality and application of safety standards related to radioactive releases. This includes overseeing the establishment of safety standards, providing guidance on environmental assessments, and ensuring that the IAEA's safety standards are effectively communicated and implemented across Member States. The role requires a strong emphasis on collaboration, as the Unit Head will work closely with various stakeholders, including international organizations, to promote best practices in radiation safety and environmental protection.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Unit Head will lead the development of safety standards and guidance materials, ensuring they reflect the latest scientific knowledge and practical experience. Key responsibilities include promoting international information exchange among specialists, organizing forums and workshops, and ensuring consistent methodologies for assessing environmental exposures. The Unit Head will also build and maintain strategic partnerships with stakeholders, oversee the unit's work to meet program objectives, and supervise staff to ensure effective implementation of tasks. Additionally, the Unit Head will represent the IAEA in international conventions related to marine environmental protection from radioactive substances, maintaining relevant databases and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in a relevant technical field such as chemistry, radiochemistry, or environmental sciences. A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field may be considered if accompanied by two additional years of relevant experience. A minimum of ten years of experience in radiation protection, particularly in assessing and managing radioactivity in the environment, is required. Proven managerial experience, including team supervision and program planning, is essential. Candidates should also have experience in developing national or international standards in radiation safety and a strong understanding of IAEA Safety Standards.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master's) in a relevant technical field. A Bachelor's degree may suffice if the candidate has substantial additional experience. The focus should be on disciplines related to radiation protection, environmental sciences, or related fields that provide a strong foundation for understanding the complexities of radioactive waste management and environmental safety.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of ten years of relevant experience in the field of radiation protection, with a strong emphasis on assessing and managing radioactive releases to the environment. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in a managerial role, showcasing their ability to lead teams and deliver programs effectively. Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's profile.
