Job Overview: The Part-time Language Teacher for French is responsible for preparing and delivering high-quality language instruction to students at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) or online. This role involves creating lesson plans that align with the UN Language Framework (UNLF), ensuring that the curriculum is engaging and tailored to the needs of learners. Teachers will conduct classes twice a week for regular courses and once a week for workshops, with a focus on interactive and communicative teaching methods. The position requires collaboration with the UNOV/UNODC administration team and maintaining high standards of teaching and student engagement. Teachers will also monitor student progress, provide feedback, and adapt teaching strategies as necessary to enhance learning outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Team Leader, Talent Development Team (TDT), the Part-time Language Teacher for French will: a) Plan and prepare course plans and lessons aligned with the UN Language Framework (UNLF) and implement the agreed curricula; b) Deliver interactive linguistic training in person or online, managing class interactions effectively; c) Design and select appropriate methods to assess learners' progress, conducting and marking assessments; d) Seek feedback from participants and provide reports on lessons learned and areas for improvement; e) Prepare the learning environment and ensure all necessary materials and technology are ready for classes; f) Monitor and record students' attendance and address any issues; g) Contribute to the success of the Language Programme by attending meetings and collaborating with the administration team.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, education/pedagogy, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A minimum of five years of experience teaching French as a foreign or second language is required, with at least three years being recent. Experience with e-learning tools and online collaboration platforms is essential, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience working with adults in a multicultural environment is desirable.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, or education/pedagogy is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields, combined with two additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience teaching French as a foreign or second language, with at least three years of that experience being recent. Familiarity with e-learning tools and online teaching methodologies is also required, as well as experience in a multicultural teaching environment.
Languages: Fluency in French is mandatory, with expert-level competence as defined by the UN Language Framework. Fluency in English is also required, with excellent drafting and communication skills. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is considered an advantage.
Additional Notes: The duration of each regular language course is 17 weeks, with classes held twice a week for 1.5 hours each, totaling 51 hours per course. Workshops are 16 weeks long, with one class per week for 1 hour, totaling 16 hours. Teachers are compensated at a rate of 50 EUR per hour for both regular courses and workshops. Payment is made in four instalments based on the total hours taught. The contract does not include medical insurance or pension allowance.
