Job Overview: The position of Part-time Language Teacher for Chinese involves preparing and facilitating language lessons, ensuring high-quality delivery of scheduled courses, and maintaining up-to-date learning materials. The teacher will be responsible for correcting assignments promptly and administering evaluations to track learner progress. This role requires collaboration with the UNOV/UNODC administration team and involves receiving feedback from clients and supervisors to improve teaching methods. Classes will be held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) or online, with a commitment to teaching twice a week for regular courses and once a week for workshops. The number of hours worked will be determined based on course registrations, and teachers may be hired for subsequent terms based on performance and demand.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Team Leader, Talent Development Team (TDT), the part-time language Teacher for Chinese will: a) Plan and prepare course plans and lessons aligned with the UN Language Framework (UNLF), ensuring that teaching units are balanced, varied, and up-to-date; b) Deliver interactive linguistic training in person or online, managing and monitoring participant learning effectively; c) Design and select appropriate methods to assess learners' progress, conducting and marking various assessments; d) Seek feedback from participants and provide reports to the Team Leader on lessons learned and areas for improvement; e) Prepare the learning environment and ensure all necessary materials and technology are ready for each class; f) Monitor and record students' attendance, addressing any issues with attendance as necessary; g) Contribute positively to the Language Programme by attending meetings and collaborating with the administration team to enhance the program.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, education/pedagogy, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in similar fields combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A minimum of five years of experience teaching Chinese as a foreign or second language is required, with at least three years being recent. Experience with e-learning tools and online collaboration platforms is essential, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience working with adults in a multicultural setting is desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, or education/pedagogy. A first-level university degree in similar fields, combined with two additional years of qualifying experience, may also be considered acceptable in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of five years of experience teaching Chinese as a foreign or second language, with at least three years of that experience being recent. Familiarity with various e-learning tools and online teaching methods is required, as well as experience in a multicultural teaching environment.
Languages: The mandatory language requirement for this position is native-level proficiency in Chinese, as defined by the UN Language Framework. Fluency in English, with excellent drafting and communication skills, is also required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is considered an advantage.
Additional Notes: The duration of each regular language course is 17 weeks, with classes held twice a week for 1.5 hours each, totaling 51 hours per course. Workshops will last for 16 weeks, with one class per week for 1 hour, totaling 16 hours. Teachers will be compensated at a rate of 50 EUR per hour for both regular courses and workshops. Payment will be made in four installments based on the total number of hours worked. The contract does not include medical insurance or pension allowance.
