Job Overview:
The position involves volunteering as a translator and reviewer for a study focused on alternative development strategies in the context of drug trafficking in Brazil. The volunteer will be responsible for reviewing a 96-page document that has been translated from Portuguese to English. This role requires a keen eye for detail and a strong understanding of both languages to ensure the accuracy and clarity of the content. The volunteer will participate in an initial online meeting to discuss the task and will provide weekly updates on their progress. The original Portuguese text will be available for reference, allowing the volunteer to compare translations and ensure fidelity to the original meaning.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Review the translated study for accuracy, clarity, and coherence in English.
  • Compare the English translation with the original Portuguese text to ensure consistency and fidelity to the original message.
  • Provide feedback and suggestions for improvements to enhance the quality of the translation.
  • Participate in an initial online meeting to clarify expectations and discuss the review process.
  • Submit weekly status updates on the progress of the review to the project coordinator.
  • Collaborate with the project team to address any questions or concerns that arise during the review process.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proficiency in both English and Portuguese, with strong writing and editing skills in English.
  • Experience in translation or reviewing translated documents is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the subject matter related to drug policy, social development, or international cooperation is an advantage.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently.
  • Good communication skills to effectively collaborate with the project team.

Educational Background:
A background in languages, translation, social sciences, or a related field is preferred. Candidates with relevant academic qualifications or coursework in translation or international relations will be given priority.

Experience:
Previous experience in translation, particularly in the context of social development or drug policy, is highly desirable. Volunteers should have a demonstrated ability to work on similar projects and meet deadlines effectively.

Languages:
Mandatory: Proficiency in English and Portuguese. Good to have: Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the UNODC's work may be considered an asset.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and as such, it may not offer financial compensation. The role is expected to be part-time, with flexible hours to accommodate the volunteer's schedule. The duration of the volunteer engagement will be determined based on the completion of the review task.
