Job Overview: The Medical Officer position within the Services to Science and Research branch (SSR) at IARC is crucial for overseeing the health and well-being of the IARC workforce. The role involves providing medical advice and support to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. The Medical Officer will work closely with the Head of Human Resources Office (HRO) and WHO medical staff to manage medical services, including preventive care, emergency response, and health education. The position emphasizes patient-centered care and interdisciplinary collaboration, aiming to enhance the overall health and safety of IARC staff. The Medical Officer will also be responsible for coordinating medical activities, managing health-related training, and advising on medical evacuations and preventive measures for staff on missions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Medical Officer will have a wide range of responsibilities, including: 1) Managing medical and paramedical activities of the Staff Health and Wellbeing (SHW) unit, organizing medical appointments, and conducting medical examinations related to employment and sick leave. 2) Ensuring timely emergency health care for staff and maintaining hygiene and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security standards in medical services. 3) Developing and coordinating health and well-being training sessions for staff, including first aid training. 4) Advising on medical evacuations and ensuring staff are medically briefed for field missions. 5) Providing preventive medicine advice and medical guidance for mission preparations. 6) Collaborating on health and well-being activities, including workstation ergonomics and safety assessments. 7) Designing training materials and promoting health education in the workplace. 8) Undertaking administrative tasks, including reviewing medical reports and providing recommendations. 9) Monitoring and evaluating medical data to prioritize SHW interventions. 10) Providing briefings on medical precautionary behaviors for staff in challenging environments. 11) Being deployed to support health actions during outbreaks or emergencies. 12) Being on-call for life-threatening medical evacuations and emergencies. 13) Acting in the absence of the Director of SHW at WHO HQ. 14) Performing related duties to ensure the smooth operation of SHW services. 15) Analyzing medical data to identify trends and implement preventive measures for workforce health.
Required Qualifications: The position requires an advanced university degree (master’s level or above) in Medicine. A certificate or relevant experience in Occupational Health is desirable. Candidates must have a minimum of seven years of clinical experience in occupational health or general/internal medicine, with no interruptions in medical practice exceeding one year. Experience working with international organizations and in travel medicine is advantageous. Candidates should also have experience in first aid and emergency medicine, as well as demonstrated international experience within the medical field.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in Medicine, which is essential for this role. A master's degree or higher is required, and additional qualifications in Occupational Health are desirable. The educational background should be from an accredited institution recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience: The Medical Officer position requires a minimum of seven years of clinical experience in relevant fields such as occupational health, general medicine, or internal medicine. Candidates should have a solid background in medical practice without significant interruptions. Experience in working with international organizations and familiarity with their policies and practices is considered an asset. Additionally, candidates should have experience in travel medicine and emergency medical situations, demonstrating their capability to handle diverse medical challenges.
Languages: Expert knowledge of French is mandatory, along with intermediate knowledge of English. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication within the international context of the IARC and WHO. Additional language skills may be beneficial but are not required.
Additional Notes: The position is part-time at 50%, with a starting annual base salary of USD 42,336, subject to applicable deductions. A variable post adjustment reflecting the cost of living at the duty station is also provided, currently amounting to USD 1,725 per month. Benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
