The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was established to implement measures that reflect the three international drug control conventions and the conventions against transnational organized crime and corruption. Since its inception in 1991, UNODC has been actively working in Brazil, supporting the Brazilian Government in fulfilling its obligations under various international conventions. Job Overview:
The Communication Intern position at UNODC is designed for individuals who are passionate about communication and advocacy within the context of international drug control and crime prevention. The intern will work part-time, dedicating 20 hours per week, and will be involved in various communication-related tasks that support the organization's objectives.   • The intern will report directly to the Communication Officer and will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful work that contributes to UNODC's mission. The role involves assisting in the design and scheduling of social media content, supporting the production of advocacy materials, managing website content, translating documents, compiling press clippings, organizing communication files, providing logistical support for events, and documenting key discussions during meetings. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in communication within an international organization while contributing to significant global issues.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Assisting in the design and scheduling of social media content to enhance engagement and visibility.
  • Supporting the production of advocacy materials such as videos, banners, and reports for campaigns that promote UNODC's mandates.
  • Managing and updating website content, ensuring technical functionality and data migration.
  • Translating documents and social media content between English and Portuguese to facilitate effective communication.
  • Compiling daily press clippings on topics related to UNODC and distributing them internally.
  • Organizing communication files to improve resource accessibility and efficiency.
  • Providing logistical support for events, including the preparation of materials.
  • Attending events and meetings as needed, documenting key discussions and outcomes.
  • Performing additional communication-related tasks as required to support team objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Additionally, candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. The ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is also essential. While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have recently completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. The educational background should ideally be in fields related to communication, international relations, social sciences, or other relevant areas that align with the internship's focus.

Experience:
While prior professional work experience is not mandatory for this internship, any relevant experience in communication, advocacy, or related fields will be considered an asset. Previous internships with international organizations or government entities are desirable, as they provide valuable context and understanding of the work environment within the United Nations system.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written Portuguese and English is required for this internship. Knowledge of Spanish is considered an advantage, while proficiency in French is beneficial as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. The ability to draft news articles and social media posts is desirable, as is the capability to design surveys and polls.

The UNODC Internship Programme is governed by Administrative Instruction ST/AI/2020/1, which may affect recognition of the internship by some educational institutions. Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations, and they are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
