The expert will be responsible for assessing the current state of fire-affected forests, identifying best practices for restoration, and compiling these practices into a manual that can be utilized by local stakeholders and authorities. This role requires a deep understanding of forest ecology, restoration techniques, and the socio-economic factors influencing forest management. The expert will work closely with UNDP and local partners to ensure that the manual is practical, accessible, and tailored to the specific needs of the region. The position is crucial for enhancing the resilience of forest ecosystems and promoting sustainable land management practices in Albania.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct a thorough assessment of fire-affected forest areas in Albania, including ecological, social, and economic impacts.
Collaborate with local stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and community groups, to gather input and insights on restoration needs and priorities.
Research and compile best practices for forest restoration, focusing on techniques that are effective in similar ecological contexts.
Develop a comprehensive restoration manual that outlines strategies, methodologies, and guidelines for restoring fire-affected forest areas.
Facilitate workshops and training sessions to disseminate the manual and educate stakeholders on its implementation.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of restoration efforts and update the manual as necessary based on feedback and new findings.
Prepare reports and documentation to communicate progress and outcomes to UNDP and other relevant parties.
Required Qualifications:
Advanced degree in forestry, environmental science, ecology, or a related field.
Proven experience in forest restoration, particularly in areas affected by fire or other disturbances.
Strong understanding of ecological principles and forest management practices.
Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into practical guidelines.
Experience working with local communities and stakeholders in a participatory manner.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, in English and Albanian.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess at least a Master's degree in forestry, environmental science, ecology, or a closely related discipline. A PhD in a relevant field is preferred but not mandatory. Additional certifications in forest management or restoration techniques will be considered an asset.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in forest management, restoration projects, or related fields is required. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in the context of UNDP or similar agencies, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the socio-economic context of Albania and previous work in the region will be an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in both English and Albanian is mandatory. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region may be considered an asset but is not required.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as an individual contractor role, which may involve a flexible work schedule. The contract duration will be specified upon selection, and the position is expected to be full-time during the assignment period. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, in line with UNDP's policies. The role may involve travel within Albania to various fire-affected sites as part of the assessment and training processes.
