Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
UNICEF, established in 1946, is a United Nations agency dedicated to providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. With a mission to promote the rights of every child, UNICEF operates in over 190 countries and territories, employing approximately 13,000 staff members. The organization focuses on equity, ensuring that the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families receive the support they need to thrive. UNICEF's work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, emphasizing the importance of addressing inequity to foster sustainable growth and stability in nations.

Job Overview:
The Online Volunteer position is designed to support UNICEF's Child Protection Work Stream (CPWS) initiative in Mozambique, specifically focusing on the development of a Mobile Application for Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE). This initiative aims to enhance the safety and resilience of children and caregivers affected by armed conflict and the risks posed by explosive devices. The volunteers will play a crucial role in reviewing existing EORE applications, contextualizing the content for Mozambique, and developing child-friendly and gender-sensitive educational materials. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a vital cause while gaining insights into child protection and education strategies in a challenging environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Online Volunteers will be responsible for several key tasks:
  • Conducting a thorough review and research of existing Mobile Applications related to EORE, such as those developed for Myanmar.
  • Assisting in the contextualization and development of the EORE App tailored specifically for Mozambique, ensuring that it meets local needs and challenges.
  • Contributing to the creation and dissemination of context-appropriate EORE materials, which must include messaging that is both child-friendly and sensitive to gender issues.
  • Supporting the production of documents in English and Portuguese, as well as integrating relevant local languages such as Makonde, Makuwa/Makhuwa, and Swahili in collaboration with CPWS members. The estimated workload for this assignment includes reviewing 1-2 applications and EORE IEC materials throughout the duration of the project, allowing volunteers to engage deeply with the content and objectives of the initiative.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should possess a strong background in education, child protection, or a related field. They should have experience in developing educational materials or applications, particularly in contexts involving children and vulnerable populations. Familiarity with explosive ordnance risk education or similar humanitarian initiatives is highly desirable. Additionally, volunteers should demonstrate strong research and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.

Educational Background:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in education, social sciences, international development, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in child protection, humanitarian response, or educational technology will be considered an asset. Candidates should also have a solid understanding of child rights and the challenges faced by children in conflict-affected areas.

Experience:
Volunteers should have prior experience working in educational or child protection settings, particularly in developing or implementing educational programs or materials. Experience in mobile application development or digital content creation is a plus. Familiarity with the specific challenges faced by children in conflict zones, especially regarding explosive hazards, will enhance the candidate's suitability for this role.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Portuguese is mandatory, as these are the primary languages for documentation and communication. Knowledge of local languages such as Makonde, Makuwa/Makhuwa, and Swahili is highly advantageous, as it will facilitate the integration of culturally relevant content into the EORE materials.

Additional Notes:
This is a volunteer position, and while it may not offer financial compensation, it provides invaluable experience in humanitarian work and child protection. The role is expected to be part-time, with flexibility in hours to accommodate the volunteers' schedules. The assignment duration is not specified, but it is anticipated to align with the development timeline of the EORE App. Volunteers will have the opportunity to connect with UNICEF professionals, enhancing their understanding of child protection initiatives and contributing to meaningful change in the lives of children affected by conflict.
