Job Overview:
The UN Volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the Team Leader of the Nature, Climate, Energy and Resilience (NCER) Unit, which is a flagship programme of UNDP Uganda. The primary goal of this programme is to ensure that Uganda achieves healthy ecosystems, productive landscapes, and increased access to affordable clean energy while building resilience to climate change and disaster risks. The volunteer will support various programme activities, including reviewing engineering designs, coordinating meetings, and assisting in reporting processes. The role is crucial in helping Uganda manage its natural resources sustainably and improve the livelihoods of its people, particularly the vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UN Volunteer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Supporting the country office in reviewing engineering designs and supervising engineering-related projects.
  • Assisting the Team Leader in coordinating Result Group 3 meetings on environment and natural resources, preparing minutes, and following up with other UN agencies for their input.
  • Supporting the reporting processes at the country office level under the NCER portfolio, including the Result Oriented Annual Reporting (ROAR) and other annual and quarterly reports.
  • Engaging with partners during project steering committee meetings and preparing reports on key outcomes.
  • Assisting in planning meetings, consultations, and other programme-related activities.
  • Maintaining records of meetings, decisions, and actions.
  • Supporting analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">technical analysis work for generating project reports for national and international partners.
  • Preparing workshop reports for technical workshops and developing briefing notes, case studies, press releases, and other media products as required.
  • Conducting research and writing/editing sections of technical reports. 1
  • Supporting the organization of relevant programme workshops involving various stakeholders, including government, private sector, NGOs, donors, and academia.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess demonstrable experience in reviewing engineering designs and supervising water and sanitation infrastructure works. They should have excellent organizational skills, a service-oriented mindset, and the ability to coordinate and report in a timely manner. Strong communication skills, including report writing and presentation abilities, are essential. The candidate should also be self-motivated, proactive, and able to work harmoniously with diverse teams. A commitment to the principles of the United Nations and compliance with its core values is crucial.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a background in engineering, environmental science, or a related field. A degree in a relevant discipline is preferred, and additional certifications or training in project management or sustainable development would be advantageous.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have prior experience in project support, particularly in areas related to environmental management, climate change, or sustainable development. Experience working with international organizations or NGOs is highly desirable, as is familiarity with UNDP's mission and objectives.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of the UNDP. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Uganda would be an asset, as it would facilitate communication with local communities and stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is a volunteer role under the UNDP, and it may involve a commitment to work full-time. The living conditions in Kampala are generally good, with access to social amenities. The role may require flexibility in working hours to accommodate meetings and activities with various stakeholders.
