Job Overview:
The Data Collection Intern position is designed for individuals who are eager to contribute to the United Nations' data management efforts. Interns will be integral in identifying and gathering data from various sources across the Arab region, both online and offline. The role requires a commitment to enhancing data collection processes, ensuring data accuracy, and supporting project goals through effective data management. Interns will work closely with team members to meet data needs and project requirements, providing valuable insights and support throughout the internship duration. This position is hybrid, allowing for a combination of remote and in-office work, and is expected to last for three months, with the possibility of extension based on project needs and intern performance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Data Collection: Interns will identify and gather data from relevant sources in the Arab region, ensuring a comprehensive approach to data collection. They will accurately enter collected data into databases, enhance data-collection processes by optimizing workflows, and utilize tools such as Google Sheets and the admin portal. Interns will also develop and implement data entry protocols to maintain consistency and quality across all data collected.
  • Data Management: Interns will ensure the accuracy and completeness of data through regular verification and validation processes. They will update and maintain the database to reflect the latest information, assist with data analysis and reporting, and generate reports and summaries as required for stakeholder reviews. Additionally, interns will address and resolve any data-related issues or discrepancies promptly.
  • Support and Coordination: Interns will collaborate with team members to ensure that data needs are met and project requirements are fulfilled. They will provide training and support to other team members on data entry and management procedures, and assist in coordinating data-related tasks and timelines to ensure that project milestones are achieved.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the internship, applicants must meet the following conditions:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent), or have graduated with a university degree.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Exhibit the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Importantly, no prior working experience is required to apply for this internship.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate program or in the final year of their undergraduate studies. A minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent is necessary for eligibility. The educational background should ideally be in fields related to data management, social sciences, international relations, or any relevant discipline that supports the functions of the internship.

Experience:

Languages:
Fluency in Arabic is required, along with a good knowledge of English. The United Nations Secretariat operates primarily in English and French, while Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, candidates must demonstrate fluency in Arabic across all four areas: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Knowledge of English should be at a confident level in at least two of the four areas.

Additional Notes:
The internship is hybrid and expected to last for three months, with the possibility of extension up to six months based on performance and project needs. Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and they are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns must provide proof of valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of the internship and submit a medical certificate of good health prior to starting.
