Job Overview:
The Medical Officer position is crucial for promoting and maintaining the health and well-being of UN personnel in South Sudan. The incumbent will provide integrated quality healthcare services, ensuring that staff members receive the necessary medical attention and support. This role involves performing clinical duties such as conducting medical examinations, immunizations, and managing the clinic's workflow. The Medical Officer will also be responsible for coordinating with nursing and laboratory staff, ensuring readiness for medical emergencies, and collaborating with other medical units and NGOs in the region. The position requires a proactive approach to health education and addressing occupational health issues, as well as supporting staff with mental health concerns. The Medical Officer will play a vital role in emergency response efforts and will work closely with security personnel to implement mass casualty responses. Overall, this position is integral to the mission's objective of ensuring the health and safety of its personnel in a challenging environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Medical Officer will undertake a variety of clinical duties, including but not limited to: conducting walk-in clinic services, performing pre-placement and periodic medical examinations, administering immunizations, and ensuring a smooth clinical workflow. The incumbent will supervise clinic and laboratory staff, delegate duties to nurses, and ensure preparedness for rapid medical responses to emergencies and casualties. Coordination with nursing, laboratory, and pharmacy staff is essential for timely requisition of medical supplies and medicines. The Medical Officer will also be responsible for maintaining records of medicine consumption and collaborating with NGOs and humanitarian medical units. Providing health education, addressing occupational health issues, and supporting staff with mental health concerns are key responsibilities. The role also involves collaboration with other UN medical units during medical evacuations and participation in emergency response teams. Additional duties may be assigned as required by the Chief Medical Officer or Deputy Chief Medical Officer.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a medical degree from a recognized institution and be licensed to practice medicine. A strong background in clinical medicine, particularly in emergency and primary care, is essential. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, integrity, and accountability. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills are necessary, along with the ability to manage a high volume of work efficiently. The ability to work under pressure and handle multiple projects simultaneously is crucial. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are required, as well as the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and multicultural environment. Flexibility and a willingness to work in remote and hazardous locations are also important.

Educational Background:
A medical degree from an accredited institution is required for this position. Additional certifications in emergency medicine, public health, or occupational health are advantageous. Continuous professional development and training in relevant medical fields are encouraged to ensure the Medical Officer remains updated on best practices and protocols in healthcare delivery.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of clinical experience, preferably in a humanitarian or emergency response setting. Experience working in challenging environments, such as conflict zones or remote locations, is highly desirable. Familiarity with UN operations and protocols, as well as experience in managing medical teams, will be considered an asset. The ability to demonstrate leadership and initiative in medical settings is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those spoken in South Sudan, is considered an asset and may enhance communication with local populations and staff.

This position is classified as a non-family duty station, and candidates should be prepared for austere living conditions with shared accommodations. The contract duration is until 15 March 2024, with the possibility of extension based on performance and organizational needs. The role is full-time, and candidates should be aware of the potential for extensive travel within the mission area.
