Job Overview:
The Telecommunications Technician position is located within the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in Damascus, Syria. This role is crucial for ensuring the effective operation of telecommunications systems that support UN peacekeeping missions. The technician will work under the overall direction of the Chief Field Technology Services (FTS) and report to the Chief ICT Operations. The position involves a variety of telecommunications specialties, including microwave radio systems, satellite communications, rigging, infrastructure maintenance, and video-teleconferencing. The technician will be responsible for the preparation, installation, and maintenance of complex telecommunications equipment and systems, ensuring they meet operational requirements and are maintained to the highest standards. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to adapt to new technologies and methods to enhance operational efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Telecommunications Technician will perform a wide range of duties across various telecommunications specialties. Key responsibilities include leading the preparation and installation of microwave radio systems, supervising the setup and testing of digital microwave systems, and coordinating the programming and commissioning of new equipment. The technician will also oversee radio-link calculations and collaborate with the Rigging unit for antenna deployment. In satellite communications, the technician will coordinate the installation and maintenance of satellite antennas and communication systems. Responsibilities in rigging include planning and overseeing the construction of communication towers, ensuring compliance with specifications, and leading the maintenance of tower systems. The technician will also prepare blueprints for cabling infrastructure, assist with the installation of switching equipment, and lead the installation and maintenance of video-teleconferencing systems. Common duties include supervising equipment procurement, ensuring spare parts availability, maintaining accurate inventory records, and developing training programs for staff.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a certification or diploma in Electronics, Systems Engineering, or Telecommunications. Additional certifications in rigging, microwave systems, and Motorola Radio systems are required or desirable. Project management certification such as PRINCE2 and ITIL V4 Foundation certification are also desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of telecommunications principles and equipment, as well as the ability to apply technical skills effectively in a variety of contexts.

Educational Background:
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with a certification or diploma in Electronics, Systems Engineering, or Telecommunications. This educational background is essential for understanding the technical aspects of telecommunications systems and equipment.

Experience:
A minimum of eight years of experience in planning and installing complex telecommunications equipment and networks is required. Candidates must have at least three years of experience at the international level, particularly in coordinating telecommunications systems in remote field offices for international organizations. Supervisory experience in a specialized telecommunications skill is desirable, as is relevant knowledge in implementing outdoor telecommunications infrastructure in remote locations. Experience in a United Nations field operation or similar international organization in a conflict or post-conflict setting is also preferred.

Languages:
Fluency in English (oral and written) is required for this position, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Proficiency in French is desirable but not mandatory.
