Job Overview: The Representative position is a senior leadership role responsible for guiding the UNFPA's operations in Burundi. The incumbent will lead the country team in designing and implementing innovative country programs that focus on population and development, as well as universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights. This includes addressing critical issues such as maternal health, family planning, gender equality, and youth empowerment. The Representative will work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society, and international partners, to ensure that the programs align with national priorities and contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The role requires a strategic thinker who can navigate complex humanitarian-development-peace contexts and advocate for the integration of sexual and reproductive health issues into broader national development agendas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the strategic direction, planning, and management of UNFPA's operations in Burundi, ensuring alignment with global, regional, and national policies.
Build and maintain institutional relationships with government counterparts, civil society, the private sector, and other stakeholders to galvanize support for UNFPA's mandate.
Promote UNFPA's role in national development agendas and establish priorities for the country office in line with corporate priorities.
Manage international and national staff, providing strategic direction, motivation, and fostering a culture of growth and development.
Carry out any other duties as required by the Regional Director.
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree or advanced university degree in Public Health, Medicine, Sociology, Demography, Gender, International Relations, International Development, Economics, Public Administration, Management, or a related field.
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible professional experience in public administration and international development, with at least 7 years in population and development, sexual and reproductive health, or humanitarian contexts.
Current knowledge of population and development issues and their relevance to the development and humanitarian agenda.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to achieve high-quality results.
Experience in advocacy and policy dialogue at national and international levels.
Strong communication skills and experience in media relations.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or advanced university degree in relevant fields such as Public Health, Sociology, Demography, Gender Studies, International Relations, or related disciplines. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of population dynamics and the implications for development and humanitarian efforts.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in public administration and international development, with at least 7 years specifically in the fields of population and development, sexual and reproductive health, or humanitarian work. Candidates should have a proven track record of leading teams and managing complex programs, as well as experience in advocacy and policy dialogue at both national and international levels. Field experience, particularly in developing or crisis contexts, is essential for this role.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of any other UN language is considered desirable, as it may enhance communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
