Job Overview: The position of GIS Mapping and Spatial Analysis Support to UN SIOC involves providing critical support to the security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Information and Operations Centre (SIOC) within the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in Afghanistan. The primary function of this role is to enhance the design and delivery of visual materials for security presentations, briefings, and reports. The Online Volunteer will engage with SIOC to produce high-quality visual outputs that will aid in the effective communication of security information to various stakeholders, including the Country Security Management Team and visiting Senior UN Officials. This role is essential for improving situational awareness and decision-making capabilities regarding safety and security operations in Afghanistan.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Volunteer will be responsible for several key tasks, including:
Discussing and defining mapping objectives in coordination with SIOC Operations.
Collecting and processing spatial and security-related data from diverse sources.
Creating GIS maps that visualize security incidents, patrol routes, and high-risk areas.
Conducting spatial analysis to identify security trends, hotspots, and operational patterns.
Preparing high-quality GIS-based visual products for security briefings and presentations.
Ensuring data accuracy, consistency, and proper documentation of spatial data. The expected outputs include accurate and visually impactful GIS maps that support operational planning and threat assessments, improved situational awareness through spatial visualization of security data, and strengthened SIOC Operations' capacity to conduct spatial analysis and data mapping.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should possess strong skills in GIS mapping and spatial analysis, with proficiency in relevant software tools such as ArcGIS or QGIS. They should have a solid understanding of data collection and processing techniques, as well as experience in creating visual products for presentations. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Educational Background: A background in geography, environmental science, urban planning, or a related field is preferred. Candidates should have relevant academic qualifications that demonstrate their expertise in GIS and spatial analysis.
Experience: Candidates should have prior experience in GIS mapping and spatial analysis, preferably in a security or humanitarian context.
