Job Overview: The IC-Adaptation/Climate Modeling Specialist position is designed for an individual contractor who will contribute to the UNDP's mission of promoting sustainable development and climate resilience. The specialist will be responsible for conducting climate modeling and adaptation assessments to inform policy and decision-making processes. This role requires a deep understanding of climate science, modeling techniques, and the socio-economic impacts of climate change. The specialist will work closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and local communities, to develop and implement strategies that enhance climate resilience. The position is expected to last for a period of 12 months, during which the specialist will provide technical expertise and support to ongoing projects and initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct comprehensive climate modeling and analysis to assess the impacts of climate change on various sectors.
Develop and implement adaptation strategies that align with national and local development plans.
Collaborate with stakeholders to gather data and insights necessary for effective climate adaptation planning.
Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to policymakers and other stakeholders.
Provide training and capacity-building support to local institutions and communities on climate adaptation practices.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented adaptation measures and suggest improvements.
Stay updated on the latest climate science and adaptation methodologies to ensure best practices are applied in projects.
Required Qualifications:
Advanced degree in climate science, environmental science, or a related field.
Proven experience in climate modeling and adaptation planning.
Strong analytical skills and proficiency in relevant software and tools for climate analysis.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
Experience working with government agencies and international organizations is an asset.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess at least a Master's degree in climate science, environmental science, or a closely related discipline. A PhD in a relevant field is preferred and may be considered an advantage for this position.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in climate modeling, adaptation planning, or related areas is required. Experience working in developing countries and familiarity with local climate issues will be highly regarded. Previous experience with UN agencies or similar organizations is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages spoken in India would be considered an asset, as it would facilitate communication with local stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: This position is a full-time individual contractor role for a duration of 12 months. The contractor will be expected to work closely with UNDP teams and other partners in India. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and benefits may include health insurance and other allowances as per UNDP policies.
