Job Overview:
The Freelance Translator position within the Language Services Section of the ICC is crucial for providing high-quality language services that facilitate the efficient conduct of court business. The role involves translating a wide range of documents, including legal, political, military, medical, and technical texts. Translators are expected to ensure accuracy and clarity while adhering to ICC standards and practices. This position requires collaboration with revisers and other translators to clarify ambiguities and maintain consistency in terminology. The role also involves using various language tools and software to enhance translation quality and efficiency. Freelance translators will work on a flexible basis, contributing to the ICC's mission of delivering justice through effective communication across languages.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Freelance translators are responsible for translating documents that cover a wide array of topics, ensuring that the translations are accurate, clear, and conform to ICC standards. Specific duties include: translating legal, political, military, medical, forensic, technical, administrative, and financial documents; consulting with LSS revisers and translators to resolve ambiguities; adhering to established terminology and in-house usage; identifying new terminology and contributing to terminology databases; and utilizing MS Office Suite and CAT Tools effectively. Translators must also manage their time efficiently to meet deadlines and may be required to work as part of a translation team when necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree in translation, languages, law, or a relevant field. Essential qualifications include a solid understanding of the required languages, knowledge of legal concepts and international legal instruments, and familiarity with terminology relevant to international organizations. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in IT and word processing programs, as well as CAT Tools. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively under pressure are also essential for this role.

Educational Background:
A university degree in translation, languages, law, or a related subject is required for this position. This educational background provides the foundational knowledge necessary for translating complex legal and technical documents accurately and effectively.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least two years of relevant work experience as a translator. However, for recent graduates with an advanced university degree who excel in the translation test, the experience requirement may be waived. Experience in translation for international organizations is considered an asset, as it demonstrates familiarity with the specific challenges and standards of translating in a legal context.

Languages:
Candidates must have mother-tongue proficiency in one of the languages in the specified language combinations and a high level of proficiency in the other language. This linguistic capability is essential for ensuring accurate and nuanced translations that meet the ICC's high standards.

The position is flexible, with variable contract durations and the potential for both fixed-term and general temporary assistance posts.
