DRC Syria employs an area-based approach to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and host communities across various sectors, including Economic Recovery and Resilience, Protection, WASH, Shelter and Infrastructure, and Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding. DRC also has active portfolios in neighboring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Türkiye, and Iraq, providing a cross-border response to the Syria crisis through protection monitoring, advocacy, and trend analysis.
Job Overview: The Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) Team Member position is based in Aleppo, with potential deployment to other areas of Syria as needed. The team member is responsible for executing all assigned HMA tasks according to their training and qualifications, as directed by the Team Leader and Technical Field Manager. This includes tasks related to Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), Battle Area Clearance (BAC), Mine Risk Education (MRE), and other duties as assigned. The role requires strict adherence to safety protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the secure and effective implementation of humanitarian mine action activities. The team member will work under the direct supervision of the Team Leader and collaborate closely with other team members and local authorities to facilitate safe and efficient operations. The position demands a commitment to maintaining high standards of discipline, teamwork, and professional behavior while actively participating in training and capacity-building initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Operational Duties: Conduct assigned HMA activities safely and in accordance with DRC SOPs and task instructions. Support EOD, BAC, MRE, and related activities based on training and authorization. Follow directions from the Team Leader and report progress, issues, or incidents promptly. Support other HMA teams when required and adapt to changing operational needs.
Safety, Accountability, and Conduct: Strictly adhere to safety protocols, daily briefings, and operational instructions to ensure safe implementation of activities. Maintain high standards of discipline, teamwork, and professional behavior. Report safety concerns, equipment problems, accidents, or security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security issues immediately to the Team Leader. Ensure assigned equipment is maintained, secure, and serviceable, reporting any losses or defects.
Learning and Capacity Strengthening: Actively participate in training, refresher sessions, and practical learning activities directed by supervisors. Support team learning by sharing lessons observed during operations and applying feedback for continuous improvement.
Operational Support: Drive DRC vehicles during operations when authorized and in accordance with organizational and local regulations. Be prepared for deployment to other operational areas outside Aleppo when required. Carry out other reasonable operational tasks assigned by the Team Leader, Technical Field Manager, or Operations Manager.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a valid manual driving license (Category A) and be capable of operating a 4x4 vehicle in the field while adhering to safety guidelines. Physical fitness is essential to perform demanding tasks in field conditions. A minimum of one year of experience in a physically demanding work environment is required, which may include previous HMA field experience, field farming, or similar roles.
Educational Background: Candidates should have the ability to read and write basic Arabic, with a Syrian Primary School level being the minimum requirement. A Secondary School level education is desirable.
Experience: The position requires at least one year of experience in a physically demanding work environment, which could include previous experience in humanitarian mine action, agricultural work, or other similar physically intensive roles.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic is mandatory for this position, as effective communication in the local language is essential for operational success and collaboration with local authorities and communities.
Additional Notes: The contract length for this position is 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and available funding. The position is classified at Level J.
