Job Overview: The Head of English Language Department is responsible for leading and supervising the English Language Department team under the authority of the Global Head of Language Services. This position entails coordinating and supervising the revision, editing, and translation of documents handled by the department. The incumbent will manage a variety of tasks related to the organization’s daily operations and the decisions made by its governing bodies. The role requires a strong focus on team management, ensuring that the department operates efficiently and effectively while promoting a client-oriented service. The incumbent will also be involved in training and mentoring staff, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary skills to perform their duties effectively. Additionally, the role involves overseeing the use of language technologies and implementing innovative solutions to enhance the quality and efficiency of language services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Team and departmental management: Lead and supervise the English Language Department team, planning and organizing the Department’s revision, editing, translation, and minute-taking work. Ensure adequate staffing cover, optimum productivity, and efficient management and operation of the Department. Promote client-oriented services by providing direction, motivating staff, and fostering excellent performance and teamwork. Organize and manage assigned resources to provide timely and effective service delivery. Drive and evaluate staff performance within the Department, providing regular coaching and training to enhance skills.
Outsourcing and administrative management: Lead the assessment of needs and drive recommendations for outsourcing the Department’s work. Oversee the monitoring of external language service providers ensuring high-quality deliverables. Lead all administrative and management tasks for outsourcing initiatives, including overseeing the full call for tenders process.
Editing, revision, translation, quality control, and terminology management: Lead the Department’s terminology work and provide guidance to staff. Perform regular on-call duties for translation and revision of documents.
Language technologies and innovation: Define and implement the Language Department’s technology strategy, including governance and deployment of CAT tools and AI-based solutions. Train and support staff in the use of language technologies.
Perform any other duty as required by the hierarchy.
Required Qualifications: A Master’s Degree in Languages, Translation, Translation Technologies, or a relevant discipline, complemented by advanced management and translation experience. At least eight years of combined experience in translation, editing, revision, and minute-taking, preferably in an international organization. Demonstrable experience in leadership and team management, along with advanced experience in the use of language technologies and tools.
Educational Background: A Master’s Degree in Languages, Translation, Translation Technologies, or a relevant discipline is required for this position. This educational background should be complemented by advanced management and translation experience to ensure the candidate is well-equipped to handle the responsibilities of the role.
Experience: Candidates must have at least eight years of combined experience in translation, editing, revision, and minute-taking, preferably within an international organization. This experience should include knowledge of working methods and procedures in international organizations, as well as demonstrable leadership and team management skills.
Languages: Perfect command of English as a mother tongue is mandatory. Additionally, excellent knowledge of two of the Organization’s other languages (Arabic, French, Spanish) is required, which will enhance the candidate's ability to communicate effectively within the multilingual environment of INTERPOL.
Additional Notes: The position is a fixed-term contract with a duration of 36 months. Candidates should be aware that only professional experience for which they can provide official proof of employment will be considered.
