Job Overview:

This position involves evaluating security risks, conducting assessments, and ensuring compliance with security protocols. The incumbent will work closely with various stakeholders, including UN agencies, NGOs, and local authorities, to facilitate safe operations. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying and managing security risks while providing training and briefings to staff on security measures. The Field Security Associate will also be responsible for maintaining relationships with security management actors and ensuring that UNHCR personnel and facilities adhere to established security guidelines and procedures. This position is vital in a highly fluid and challenging environment, where the safety of staff and operations is paramount.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Field Security Associate include:
  • Assisting the supervisor in evaluating security risks and assessing existing security measures for UNHCR staff and operations.
  • Conducting regular security assessments in coordination with UNDSS and other agencies.
  • Monitoring compliance with security protocols and advising management on deficiencies.
  • Overseeing the physical security of UNHCR premises and reporting any issues.
  • Supervising the guard force in accordance with UNSMS policies.
  • Supporting UNHCR Protection Colleagues in ensuring the safety of refugees and persons of concern.
  • Assisting in the implementation of security-related projects and monitoring security events.
  • Maintaining relations with local law enforcement and security authorities.
  • Providing security briefings and training to UNHCR and partner staff. 1
  • Responding to staff queries on security issues and providing immediate assistance. 1
  • Advising management on security-related matters and maintaining liaison with Host Government Security Forces.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of three years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma, or two years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Essential qualifications include a strong understanding of security operations and analysis, as well as proficiency in IT and computer literacy. Candidates should demonstrate cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse environment. Additionally, a high level of knowledge in security management practices is essential for this role.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a High School Diploma or equivalent for candidates with three years of relevant experience. For those with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, two years of relevant work experience is acceptable. While specific fields of education are not mandated, a background in security and safety is advantageous. Certifications in safety and security are also beneficial for applicants.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience for candidates with a High School Diploma, or two years for those with a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Experience in delivering security training, conducting security assessments, and familiarity with the United Nations Security Management System (UNSMS) is highly desirable. Candidates should also have experience in administrative and organizational tasks related to security operations.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Ukrainian is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset, particularly if they are relevant to the duty station. For General Service jobs, proficiency in English and/or the UN working language of the duty station is required, with local language knowledge being advantageous.
