The organization collaborates with governments, women's movements, and the private sector to translate progress into lasting changes. UN Women focuses on four key areas: leadership, economic empowerment, freedom from violence, and women, peace and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security, as well as humanitarian action. The organization emphasizes that the rights of women and girls are central to global progress, advocating for gender equality as an intrinsic part of its identity. Women Count, UN Women’s global gender data programme, aims to support member states in implementing the 2030 Agenda by improving the availability, accessibility, and use of gender data and statistics. This multi-year, multi-country initiative links normative and technical work on gender statistics at global, regional, and national levels, promoting a supportive policy environment, enhancing data production, and increasing data use for better monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Job Overview:
The role of the online volunteer is crucial in supporting the Women Count programme by providing editorial and formatting expertise for three significant technical knowledge products. These products aim to enhance the understanding and application of gender data in national SDG monitoring frameworks and household surveys. The volunteer will be responsible for editing and proofreading extensive documents, ensuring that they meet UN Women’s editorial standards and style guidelines. This position requires a keen eye for detail and a strong understanding of gender issues, as the knowledge products are designed to drive structural changes in economic policies and empower women through improved visibility of their contributions. The volunteer will work on integrating citizen data into national frameworks, compiling case studies, and creating guides for mainstreaming gender perspectives in surveys, all of which are essential for advancing gender equality and women's empowerment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The online volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
  • Copyediting the three technical knowledge products to ensure language consistency and adherence to UN Women editorial guidelines and UN style guide.
  • Proofreading the documents to correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting errors.
  • Formatting the Word documents according to Women Count branding guidelines.
  • Collaborating with the Women Count team to understand the context and objectives of the documents to ensure that the final products effectively communicate the intended messages.
  • Providing feedback on the clarity and coherence of the content, suggesting improvements where necessary.
  • Ensuring that the documents are accessible and user-friendly for a diverse audience, including policymakers, researchers, and advocates.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position should possess the following qualifications:
  • Strong command of the English language, with excellent editing and proofreading skills.
  • Familiarity with UN Women’s editorial guidelines and UN style guide is preferred.
  • Experience in editing technical documents, particularly in the field of gender equality, social sciences, or related areas.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Knowledge of gender issues and data-related topics is an advantage.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a background in English, communications, gender studies, social sciences, or a related field. A degree or equivalent experience in editing, writing, or publishing is highly desirable. Familiarity with gender data and statistics will be beneficial for understanding the context of the documents being edited.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have prior experience in editing and proofreading, particularly with technical documents. Experience working with international organizations or in the field of gender equality is a plus. Candidates should demonstrate a track record of producing high-quality written content and an understanding of the nuances involved in gender-related topics.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those relevant to gender issues or the regions covered by UN Women, would be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
This is a remote volunteer position, and the duration of the contract is not specified. The role is part-time, allowing for flexible working hours. The volunteer will be contributing to a significant global initiative aimed at enhancing gender equality and women's empowerment through improved data practices. While this position is unpaid, it offers valuable experience in working with a leading UN agency and contributing to impactful projects.
