Job Overview: This internship is designed to provide a comprehensive experience within the Public Inquiries Unit (PIU) and the Group Programmes Unit (GPU) of the Visitors Services Section, which is part of the Outreach Division of the Department of Global Communications. The primary aim of this internship is to engage and educate the public about the work of the United Nations, fostering support for its ideals and activities. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with the general public, assisting in guided tours of the UN Headquarters and facilitating briefings with UN experts. The internship is structured to be full-time, requiring a commitment of five days a week, although there is flexibility for part-time arrangements based on the intern's availability and the needs of the Units. Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will engage in a variety of tasks that support the mission of the Visitors Services Section. Responsibilities may include assisting in outreach activities aimed at educating the public about the UN's work, which involves providing support for guided tours, briefings, events, and multimedia projects. Interns will also conduct research on UN thematic issues, draft correspondence, short articles, and text for fact sheets, as well as create content for social media and other communications materials. Additionally, interns will respond to visitors' queries both in person and in writing, assist in the development and analysis of surveys regarding visitors' experiences, and may be involved in taking photographs and videos to document events and activities. Other duties may be assigned as necessary, allowing interns to gain a well-rounded experience in public engagement and communications within the UN framework.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: either be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent), or be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). While professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, candidates should have a field of study that is relevant to the internship's focus. Proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word and MS PowerPoint, is essential for performing the tasks associated with this role.
Educational Background: Candidates should possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree or be in the final year of their undergraduate studies. Alternatively, applicants may have completed a graduate program. The educational background should ideally be in a field related to international relations, communications, public relations, or a similar discipline that aligns with the responsibilities of the internship.
Experience: While prior professional work experience is not mandatory for this internship, candidates are expected to have relevant academic experience or coursework that pertains to the functions of the internship.
