Job Overview:
The Nuclear Safety Officer position is critical within the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) of the IAEA. This role involves planning and coordinating projects that support the Division of Nuclear Installation Safety (NSNI) in enhancing the safety of nuclear installations globally. The Nuclear Safety Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing activities that align with the Division's objectives, which include ensuring proper site selection, installation design, and regulatory practices. The officer will also serve as a scientific secretary and technical expert, leading technical meetings and safety reviews, and providing expert input on safety standards and methodologies. This position requires a proactive approach to improving operational safety and fostering a culture of safety within nuclear organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Nuclear Safety Officer will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including leading projects that involve both internal and external experts to develop and evaluate safety standards. The officer will provide guidance to Member States on safety assessment methodologies and assist in organizing peer review missions to evaluate regulatory oversight effectiveness. Additionally, the officer will advise on management systems, safety culture, and human resources management within nuclear organizations. The role also includes organizing capacity-building projects that encompass education and training in nuclear safety, emergency preparedness, and regulatory effectiveness. The officer will maintain and operate nuclear safety information systems and participate in training events. Furthermore, the incumbent will represent the IAEA at professional meetings and conferences, contributing to the global dialogue on nuclear safety.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in engineering, physical sciences, nuclear sciences, chemical sciences, mathematical sciences, behavioral sciences, social psychology, or a related field. Alternatively, a university degree in one of these fields combined with two additional years of relevant experience may be considered. The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, with at least five years at the international level. Candidates should have experience applying nuclear safety principles and techniques, organizing technical meetings, and drafting technical reports and publications. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment are essential.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline. Candidates with a bachelor's degree in the specified fields, along with additional relevant experience, may also be considered. The emphasis is on candidates who have a strong foundation in nuclear safety and related technical areas, as well as a demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge in practical settings.

Experience:
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the field of nuclear safety, with a minimum of seven years of relevant experience, including five years at an international level. Experience in applying nuclear safety principles, leading technical meetings, and managing capacity-building missions is crucial. Familiarity with international projects, particularly those involving developing countries, is considered an asset. The candidate should also have a proven track record of drafting and finalizing technical reports and guidelines.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, with excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's profile.
