Job Overview:
The position of Technical Expert in Decommissioning and Remediation is focused on providing specialized technical expertise to the Decommissioning and Remediation Unit within the Waste and Environmental Safety Section of the IAEA. The main purpose of this role is to contribute to the development of safety standards and practical guidance related to the decommissioning of facilities that use radioactive materials. This includes working on projects that involve the management of radioactive waste and ensuring that safety measures are in place to protect workers, the public, and the environment. The expert will be expected to engage in various activities such as organizing workshops, expert missions, and scientific visits, as well as contributing to the development of position papers and safety guides. The role requires a proactive approach to addressing the safety needs of member states and assisting them in implementing effective decommissioning practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Technical Expert include:

• Providing technical input on the development of a position paper regarding in-situ disposal and entombment of radioactive waste.
• Offering technical expertise related to national Technical Cooperation (TC) projects on decommissioning, which involves organizing workshops, expert missions, scientific visits, and fellowships in accordance with the projects' work plans.
• Contributing to the development of services focused on the safety of the nuclear 'back-end' to assist countries that are beginning to develop nuclear capabilities.
• Assisting in the creation of practical guidance on the decommissioning of novel types of facilities, including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and fusion reactors.
• Participating in the revision of the Safety Guide WS-G-5.2, which pertains to safety assessments for the decommissioning of facilities using radioactive materials.
• Providing technical expertise related to safety standards, peer reviews, eLearning materials, and international conferences as necessary.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for this position include a university degree in nuclear engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, or thermal engineering. Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in planning, implementing, or regulating the decommissioning of facilities and/or managing waste and materials resulting from decommissioning activities. Additionally, candidates should possess knowledge of international guidance on decommissioning and waste management, as well as experience in the technical review and critical evaluation of safety-related documents. Strong IT skills, particularly in Excel and other relevant software, are essential, along with excellent communication skills.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a university degree in a relevant field such as nuclear engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, or thermal engineering. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of nuclear safety and waste management, as well as for effectively contributing to the development of safety standards and guidance.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the field of nuclear safety, specifically related to the planning, implementation, or regulation of decommissioning processes. This experience should include a strong understanding of waste management practices and the ability to critically evaluate safety-related documents. Candidates should also have experience in engaging with international standards and guidelines pertaining to decommissioning and waste management.

Languages:

Additional Notes:
The consultancy position offers a daily fee of up to a maximum of €300, which is determined based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. If the assignment requires duty travel, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs will be provided.
