Job Overview: The intern will work under the direct supervision of the statistics specialist within the Research and Data Section of the Policy Division at UN Women. This position is designed to provide support for various flagship publications, particularly focusing on the Progress on the SDGs: The Annual Gender Snapshot 202
The intern will engage in literature reviews, analyze statistics, develop data visualizations, and perform fact-checking tasks. The role aims to enhance the intern's understanding of UN Women's work, the UN system, women's rights, and gender equality, while also providing practical experience in applied gender-responsive research and quantitative research methods. The intern will be expected to work collaboratively in a multicultural team environment, contributing to the organization's mission of promoting gender equality and women's empowerment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's primary responsibilities will include supporting research work for the Progress on the SDGs: The Annual Gender Snapshot 2026 by conducting literature reviews and preparing background research documents. The intern will also develop data visualizations for reports using statistical packages such as R and tools like Excel and Power BI. Additionally, the intern will participate in writing, checking, and running code scripts in STATA or R to extract indicators from large international datasets, including the Demographic and Health Surveys from USAID and the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys from UNICEF. The intern will be expected to contribute to the overall research agenda of UN Women, ensuring that the data and findings are accurate and effectively communicated.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong interest in development, research, advocacy, and gender policy work. A good understanding of quantitative research methods is essential, along with experience in statistical programming or database programming. The intern should demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity, aligning with UN Women's core values. Additionally, the intern should exhibit competencies such as awareness and sensitivity regarding gender issues, accountability, creative problem-solving, effective communication, inclusive collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and leading by example.
Educational Background: Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's degree or equivalent), or have recently graduated with a university degree. Alternatively, candidates may be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program that is part of a degree program and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements. Relevant disciplines include Public Policy, Economics, Social Sciences, or other related fields.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have a foundational understanding of quantitative research methods and experience with statistical programming or database programming. While specific years of experience are not mandated, candidates should demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge that align with the responsibilities of the internship. Recent graduates or those currently enrolled in relevant academic programs are encouraged to apply, as the internship is designed to provide practical experience in the field.
Languages: Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral, are required for this position. Additionally, a working knowledge of another UN language is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and contribute to UN Women's global initiatives.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid, but interns who do not receive financial support from other sources will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs during the internship.
