Job Overview: The National Media and Communications Officer will play a crucial role in coordinating the implementation of media and communications-related activities within the IOM Country Office in Seoul. This position involves working under the supervision of the Chief of Mission and the National Programme Officer, while also collaborating with the Regional Media and Communications Officer and the Media, Innovation & Community Engagement Unit at Headquarters. The officer will be responsible for aligning the Country Office's external communications activities with the organization's strategic communications priorities and guidelines. This includes promoting accurate narratives on migration-related issues to the media, the general public, and key partners. The role also entails preparing media lines for crisis situations, providing technical inputs on communications issues to senior management, and developing project-level communications plans for initiatives funded by the Government of Korea. The officer will review external communications content, support high-profile events, maintain the Country Office's online presence, and strengthen media relations to enhance visibility and advocacy efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the National Media and Communications Officer include assisting in the coordination of media and communications activities, preparing media lines for crisis situations, providing editorial recommendations for external communications content, organizing visibility events and media interviews, maintaining the Country Office's online presence, monitoring branding and public visibility efforts, strengthening media links, drafting key messages and background documents, undertaking duty travel for multimedia content creation, supervising Media and Communications staff, and developing training materials to enhance the communications capacity of the Country Office. The officer will also ensure that all communications content adheres to gender, diversity, and inclusion standards and report any inconsistencies to the supervisor.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree in Journalism, Communications, Business Administration, Political or Social Sciences, or a related field from an accredited academic institution. Alternatively, a university degree in one of these fields with two years of relevant professional experience is acceptable. Experience as a writer, editor, and content producer/manager in international journalism or public information roles is preferred, along with experience in digital communications, corporate writing, managing donor visibility, media liaison, and humanitarian communications. Experience working in the region or in emergency settings is an advantage, as is experience in UN or other international organizations.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in relevant fields such as Journalism, Communications, Business Administration, Political or Social Sciences, or a related field from an accredited institution. Candidates with a university degree in these fields and two years of relevant professional experience are also eligible. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have experience in writing, editing, and content production/management, particularly in international journalism or public information roles. Experience in digital communications and social media is essential, along with experience in corporate writing, managing donor visibility, and media liaison. Candidates with experience in humanitarian communications and those who have worked in the region or in emergency settings will have an advantage. Experience in UN or other international organizations is also beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in one of IOM's official languages (English, French, Spanish) is mandatory for all staff members. For this position, fluency in both Korean and English is required, both orally and in writing. The proficiency of the required languages will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: The selection process for this position may be used to staff similar roles in various duty stations. Recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in a similar position for a period of 24 months.
