Job Overview: The Climate Peace security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Data Analyst position is a critical role within the Civil Affairs Division of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The analyst will be tasked with supporting the mission's efforts to counter misinformation and hate speech that threaten peace and stability in South Sudan. This role involves leading the preparation of data visualizations and infographics to aid decision-making processes, developing analytical capabilities related to climate security, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance data collection and quality. The analyst will also be responsible for identifying trends in data, developing self-service analytic dashboards, and improving data analysis processes to support climate-sensitive conflict analysis and crisis management. This position is essential for integrating climate security into broader humanitarian and development strategies, ensuring that data-driven insights inform critical decisions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Climate Peace Security Data Analyst include leading the preparation of data visualizations and infographics for UNMISS leadership, developing and implementing various analyses related to climate security, collaborating with UN agencies and government departments to improve data collection, and enhancing UNMISS's data catalogue and models. The analyst will also identify and interpret trends in data, develop analytic dashboards, and locate opportunities for process improvements in climate-sensitive conflict analysis. Additionally, the analyst will provide guidance on political analysis and analytical techniques for climate-related security risks, and perform other duties as requested, including integrated analysis and situational monitoring.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess at least a Master's degree or equivalent in mathematics, applied statistics, data science, applied ecology, behavioral science, environmental sciences, or a closely related field. A first-level university degree in these areas, combined with relevant experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Furthermore, candidates should have at least 2 years of progressively responsible experience in applied analytics, spatial analysis, GIS, business intelligence, and related fields. Proficiency in database or programming languages such as SQL, Python, R, and Javascript is required, along with experience in self-service analytics and data visualization.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in relevant fields such as mathematics, applied statistics, data science, applied ecology, behavioral science, or environmental sciences. A first-level university degree in these specializations may be accepted if accompanied by qualifying experience. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding complex data analysis and contributing effectively to the mission's objectives.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in areas such as applied analytics, spatial analysis, GIS, and information management. Experience in using data to inform decisions and strategies is essential, as is familiarity with database or programming languages. The role also requires experience with self-service analytics and data visualization tools, as well as mapping tools like QGIS or ArcGIS. Experience in international crisis operations is considered an advantage, as is the ability to use cloud-based technologies and tools for data analysis.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of French is desirable, and familiarity with another UN official language is considered an advantage.
