Job Overview:
The Accountant position is crucial for maintaining the financial integrity and effective management of the STRIDES project in South Sudan. The role involves direct supervision by the Regional Finance Manager and encompasses a variety of day-to-day financial operations. This includes recording, reviewing, and reconciling financial transactions, preparing payment vouchers, ensuring compliance with FHI 360 and donor financial policies, and supporting budget and audit processes. The Accountant is expected to ensure timely financial reporting, adherence to internal controls, and the accuracy of accounting records. The position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to handle sensitive financial information, and a commitment to efficiency and transparency in managing donor funds. Collaboration with the Finance and Operations team, procurement, logistics, and program units is essential to ensure smooth financial operations that support project goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Accountant will apply accounting principles and practices to a limited range of accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cost accounting, and other fiscal functions. Responsibilities include providing support for field programs through live training on financial systems, reviewing monthly financial reports for accuracy, preparing and recording accounts payable and journal entries, and preparing reconciliations of accounts. The Accountant will also examine financial statements for accuracy and compliance, prepare risk assessment reports, and coordinate with financial analysts to address issues. Additional duties include assisting with internal and external audit requests, implementing control systems, preparing financial reports, and serving as a technical advisor on fiscal management. The role may involve system design and requires the ability to establish effective working relationships within the organization.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration. A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting and financial management is required, preferably in USG or other international donor-funded projects. Candidates should have sound knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal control systems. Hands-on experience with accounting software or ERP systems is preferred, along with strong analytical and numerical skills. The ability to interpret financial data and prepare accurate reports is essential, as is a good understanding of South Sudan financial and tax regulations. Candidates must demonstrate integrity, confidentiality, and a commitment to organizational values, along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration. This foundational education is critical for understanding the complexities of financial management and accounting principles necessary for the role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting and financial management. This experience should preferably be in the context of USG or other international donor-funded projects, indicating familiarity with the specific financial regulations and reporting requirements associated with such funding.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as the role requires reading, writing, and speaking in English. Knowledge of Juba Arabic or other local languages is highly desirable, especially for roles that involve direct engagement with local communities, enhancing communication and understanding within the project context.

Additional Notes:
The position is based in Juba, South Sudan, and is expected to have less than 10% travel requirements. South Sudanese nationals are encouraged to apply. The expected hiring range for this role is between USD 20,000 - 30,000 annually for basic salary.
