Job Overview: The Programme Associate position at UN Women China Office involves supporting the South-South Cooperation for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (SSC for GEWE) portfolio. The role requires coordination, research, analysis, communication, reporting, and administrative support. The Programme Associate will work under the supervision of the Partnership Specialist and will be responsible for preparing and coordinating partner engagements, managing program activities, and supporting event organization. The position also entails conducting research and analysis on key issues related to South-South Cooperation and gender equality, as well as providing translation support for program documents. The Programme Associate will play a crucial role in ensuring effective communication and collaboration among various stakeholders, including national partners, development partners, and UN agencies, to promote gender equality and women's empowerment in line with UN Women’s mission and objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Programme Associate include:
Supporting the preparation, coordination, and follow-up of partner engagements and program management activities, which involves drafting agendas, presentations, speeches, meeting notes, and minutes, as well as coordinating meetings with internal and external partners.
Assisting in the organization of events by designing agendas, sending invitations, preparing speeches, and creating event-related communication materials such as press releases and social media content.
Providing on-site coordination and execution support for meetings and events as required.
Conducting research and analysis on key issues related to South-South Cooperation and gender equality, including providing inputs on research and ensuring the quality of knowledge products.
Supporting program management and resource mobilization efforts by providing high-quality translation support for key program documents, proposals, and knowledge-sharing materials.
Offering administrative and logistical support for meetings and events, including facilitating communication between the team and partners, drafting necessary documents, and maintaining records.
Performing any other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor, while also promoting voluntary action and community engagement as part of the UN Volunteers program.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the Programme Associate position should possess a strong understanding of operations relevant to UN Women, with technical capabilities or knowledge that can be applied to UN Women procedures and rules. They should demonstrate discretion, political sensitivity, and the ability to liaise with various stakeholders, particularly in senior positions. A high degree of autonomy, personal initiative, and resourcefulness are essential, along with the ability to manage information confidentially and accurately. Candidates should also exhibit professionalism, integrity, teamwork, and respect for diversity, as well as a commitment to continuous learning and effective communication skills.
Educational Background: The educational background required for the Programme Associate position includes a degree in social sciences, international relations, gender studies, or a related field. A strong academic foundation in gender equality and women's empowerment issues is essential, as well as familiarity with international development cooperation frameworks and policies. Additional training or certifications related to project management, research methodologies, or communication strategies would be advantageous.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in program support, research, or administrative roles, preferably within the context of international development or gender equality initiatives. Experience working with UN agencies or other international organizations is highly desirable. The ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and work under pressure with conflicting deadlines is crucial for success in this role.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both spoken and written. Proficiency in Mandarin is highly desirable, as it will facilitate communication with local partners and stakeholders. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region or international development would be considered an asset.
Additional Notes: This is a national UN Volunteer assignment based in Beijing, China. The Programme Associate will be responsible for arranging their own housing and living essentials. The position may involve travel within the area of operations as necessary. The living conditions in Beijing are generally favorable, with access to excellent public infrastructure, health services, and a variety of accommodation options. The city has a cosmopolitan culture and offers a range of recreational facilities, although the cost of living can be relatively high compared to other parts of China. The UN Volunteer will be expected to engage with local communities and promote voluntary action as part of their role.
