Job Overview: The Technical Advisor Epidemiologist position at CHAI is designed for a highly motivated individual who will lead a team of epidemiologists in improving malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) programs across Anglophone and Lusophone Africa. The role involves shaping the strategy of the analytics and surveillance team, managing team members, and providing technical support to CHAI and Ministry of Health (MOH) staff in six countries. The position requires a strong emphasis on using data to inform decisions and improve surveillance systems, with a focus on resourcefulness, tenacity, independence, patience, humility, and a strong work ethic. The advisor will report to the Senior Technical Advisor for Malaria & NTDs Analytics & Surveillance in the African regions.
Duties and Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Technical Advisor include leading all malaria, NTD, and dengue surveillance and analytics work for the region, serving as a technical advisor for epidemiological questions, and contributing to the strategic vision for malaria and NTDs. The advisor will oversee the implementation of analytics and surveillance projects, manage data integration and statistical analyses, and guide the development of digital tools for surveillance systems. Additionally, the advisor will manage a team of junior and mid-level epidemiologists, collaborate with local and international partners, and represent CHAI at external meetings. The role also involves monitoring and evaluating CHAI’s malaria analytics and surveillance support, ensuring high-quality guidelines and operational manuals are developed and disseminated.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related field, along with at least 5 years of work experience that includes increasing levels of responsibility and leadership. Experience in strategic planning through data use processes, mentoring junior staff, and conducting epidemiological surveys is essential. Candidates should have experience in surveillance system assessments, data quality assessments, and working with government officials. Exceptional skills in epidemiological analysis and statistical programming (R, STATA, ArcGIS, QGIS) are required, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and report writing. Strong written and oral communication skills are necessary, with fluency in English being mandatory.
Educational Background: A Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, or a related field is required for this position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of public health challenges and the analytical skills needed to address them effectively.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, with a focus on increasing levels of responsibility and leadership.
