Job Overview: The Driver position under the EpiC project in Nigeria is crucial for ensuring the safe and timely transportation of staff, partners, and goods necessary for the successful implementation of health initiatives. The role requires a strong commitment to road safety, adherence to organizational policies, and a proactive approach to vehicle maintenance. The Driver will be responsible for planning routes effectively, ensuring that all transportation needs are met efficiently, and maintaining a high standard of professionalism while interacting with diverse individuals. This position plays a vital role in supporting the overall objectives of the EpiC project, which aims to strengthen health systems and improve health outcomes in Nigeria, particularly in maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Transportation and Logistics: Safely transport staff, consultants, partners, and visitors to various official destinations, including project sites and meetings. Ensure timely and reliable transportation to support field missions and program activities. Deliver documents, equipment, and supplies as required. Plan routes in advance, taking into account traffic conditions and safety considerations.
Vehicle Management: Conduct daily vehicle checks to ensure roadworthiness, including monitoring fuel, oil, water, brakes, tires, and lights. Maintain cleanliness and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security of assigned vehicles. Keep accurate vehicle logbooks and fuel records, and arrange for routine servicing. Report any mechanical faults to the supervisor promptly.
Safety, Security, and Compliance: Adhere to Nigeria Road Traffic Regulations and FHI 360’s transport policies. Follow security protocols during field travel and ensure the safety of passengers and cargo. Report any accidents or security concerns immediately according to established procedures.
Administrative Support: Provide logistical support when not driving, assist with loading and unloading goods, and support office operations during peak periods or special events as needed.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of Senior Secondary Certificate (SSCE).
At least 5 years of professional driving experience, preferably with an International NGO or in a corporate environment.
Experience as a mechanic or auto-electrician is an advantage.
Experience working in Northern Nigeria is desirable.
Possession of a valid Nigerian driver’s license is mandatory.
Excellent verbal communication and listening skills are required.
Ability to read, write, and speak basic English; ability to speak Hausa is an advantage.
Computer literacy in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) is necessary.
Educational Background: The position requires a minimum of a Senior Secondary Certificate (SSCE). This educational background is essential to ensure that the candidate possesses basic literacy and numeracy skills necessary for effective communication and record-keeping in the role.
Experience: Candidates must have at least 5 years of professional driving experience. This experience should preferably be with an International NGO, particularly those funded by the US Government, or in a corporate environment. Familiarity with the driving conditions in Northern Nigeria is highly desirable, as it indicates the candidate's ability to navigate various terrains and understand local traffic regulations.
Languages: The mandatory language for this position is basic English, which is essential for communication and understanding instructions. Additionally, the ability to speak Hausa is considered an advantage, as it may facilitate better communication with local communities and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is full-time and requires a significant amount of travel, with an estimated 80% to 90% of the time spent on the road. The role is critical for the success of the EpiC project, which focuses on improving health outcomes in Nigeria.
