Job Overview:
This internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is based in UNEP's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) located in Bangkok, Thailand. The intern will work under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and the direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator for Finance and Economic Transformation Subprogramme. The primary focus of this role is to support UNEP's initiatives related to financing energy transitions and climate finance. The intern will engage in research, stakeholder engagement, and contribute to various UNEP projects, including the UNEP-FI Global Roundtable and the preparation of the 2026 NDC Review Report for Asia-Pacific. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental finance and policy within a leading international organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including: 1) Supporting UNEP's work on financing energy transition initiatives such as the Seed Capital Assistance Facility and EMPOWER by conducting research and scoping related to key actors in energy and climate finance. This includes engaging with private equity funds, venture capital funds, and project development companies. 2) Contributing to UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) by providing insights on regulatory policies, assisting in capacity-building efforts for members regarding transition finance, and supporting event preparations for the UNEP-FI Global Roundtable scheduled for June 202
  • 3) Assisting in the work of Issue-based Coalitions in the Asia-Pacific Region, particularly in raising ambitions on climate action and preparing inputs for the 2026 NDC Review Report. 4) Attending relevant events in Bangkok and possibly Southeast Asia, as mutually agreed upon with the supervisor. The intern may also be assigned other tasks as agreed with their supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Candidates should be currently enrolled in or have recently graduated (within 1 year) from a Master’s or Ph.D. program with a focus on Finance, Climate Change Financing, or a related area. While prior experience in climate change and financing is advantageous, it is not mandatory for applicants to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the internship type is required. Applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams, and possess the ability to draft news articles and social media posts, as well as design surveys and polls.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this internship includes being a student in the final year of a first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or being enrolled in or having completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. The focus should be on areas related to finance, climate change financing, or similar fields. Proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree program must be provided during the application process.

Experience:
The level of experience needed for this position is relatively flexible. While prior professional work experience is not required for applicants to the UN Internship Programme, candidates should have relevant academic backgrounds and may benefit from any practical experience related to climate change, finance, or environmental policy. The internship is designed to provide practical experience and learning opportunities rather than requiring extensive prior experience.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, but English remains the primary language for communication within the organization.

Interns at UNEP are not financially remunerated, meaning that they will not receive a salary or stipend for their work. All costs and arrangements related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Thailand may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization before starting the internship.
