Job Overview: The Communications Consultant will report directly to the Country Representative and is tasked with assisting in the planning and implementation of the Office's communications and advocacy strategies. The primary goal is to enhance the visibility and awareness of UN Women among partners, the media, and the public. This role requires close collaboration with various teams within the Country Office, Regional Communications teams, other UN Agencies, government officials, media, donors, and civil society. The consultant will be responsible for developing communication strategies that integrate advocacy and outreach into project proposals and campaigns, monitoring media discourse on gender issues, and coordinating communications implementation for UN Women campaigns and events.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan and design communication and outreach/advocacy strategies and plans, conducting needs assessments and synthesizing findings into strategic proposals with a gender perspective.
Develop and disseminate advocacy materials, including press releases and newsletters, while managing their distribution.
Coordinate media relations, managing press inquiries and organizing events such as press conferences.
Build partnerships with donors and stakeholders, identifying new communication opportunities and liaising with advocacy partners.
Maintain the Country Office's online presence, managing digital platforms and creating engaging social media content.
Facilitate knowledge sharing by identifying best practices and producing regular newsletters on achievements.
Provide training and workshops on communication and advocacy as needed.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Master's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted. Candidates should possess strong communication skills, knowledge of web-based knowledge management systems, and an understanding of media production standards. Experience in public relations, communications, or advocacy at a national or international level is essential, with a minimum of two years of professional experience. Familiarity with social media and media relations is also beneficial.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in communications, public relations, journalism, or a relevant field. A first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree if accompanied by additional qualifying experience.
Experience: At least two years of professional work experience in public relations, communications, or advocacy at either the national or international level is required. Experience in media relations and social media outreach is considered an asset.
Languages: Fluency in English and Portuguese is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of any other UN official language is considered an asset.
