Job Overview: The National security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security Support Officer plays a crucial role in the security management of the IOM Country Office in Syria. This position is responsible for providing expert support on all security-related aspects of the office's operations and activities. The officer will assist the Field Security Officer (FSO) and the Chief of Mission (COM) in managing security risks effectively, ensuring that IOM programs can be implemented safely and efficiently. The officer will be expected to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various stakeholders, including UN Security Management System organizations, host government agencies, and partner security services. This role requires a proactive approach to monitoring and analyzing the security situation in Syria, as well as the ability to communicate significant events and incidents promptly. The National Security Support Officer will also be involved in developing and implementing security plans, conducting security risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with UN security measures.
Duties and Responsibilities: The National Security Support Officer will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Providing expert support in security risk management and ensuring the implementation of security measures in the Country Office.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with relevant security stakeholders.
Monitoring and analyzing the security situation in Syria, communicating significant events in a timely manner.
Conducting security risk assessments and developing security plans tailored to the Country Office's needs.
Conducting physical surveys of offices and residences to ensure compliance with security measures.
Managing the Country Office Warden system and maintaining updated staff lists.
Preparing security reports and briefings for IOM personnel.
Supervising Field Security Associates and ensuring the delivery of appropriate security services.
Implementing and managing security access control procedures and conducting periodic security assessments. 1
Providing technical inputs to the Chief of Mission on security matters and assisting in investigations related to security incidents.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a university degree in Security, Social Sciences, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Law, International Relations, or a related field from an accredited institution. A Master's degree in the aforementioned fields is also acceptable. Additionally, candidates should have at least two years of relevant professional experience in security management or related areas. Experience in humanitarian settings, public or private sector security programs, and risk assessments is highly desirable. Candidates should also have relevant certifications from the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) in security-related training programs.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in a relevant field such as Security, Social Sciences, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Law, or International Relations. Accredited universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. A Master's degree in the same fields is preferred, especially for candidates with less professional experience.
Experience: The position requires relevant professional experience in security management, risk assessments, or related fields. Candidates with experience in operational security risk management, investigations, and physical security will be given preference. Additionally, candidates with certifications from UNDSS in security training programs will be considered more favorably. Experience in the humanitarian sector or with international organizations is also advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English and Arabic is mandatory, both oral and written. Proficiency in these languages will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly French or Spanish, is considered a plus, as IOM's official languages include these as well.
Additional Notes: The position is subject to funding confirmation, and any offer made to the candidate will depend on this. The selection process may also be used to fill similar positions in various duty stations. Recommended candidates will remain eligible for appointment in a similar position for a period of 24 months. National Professional Officers must be nationals of the country of their employment. The appointment will be contingent upon certification of medical fitness, verification of residency, and necessary government authorizations.
