Job Overview: The Feminist Economist position is pivotal in advancing gender-responsive economic reforms in West and Central Africa. Reporting to the WEE Regional Policy Advisor, the incumbent will work closely with UN Women’s program and operations teams, implementing partners, and staff focused on women's economic empowerment. The role involves overseeing the development of programs that promote gender equality in economic policies, providing thought leadership, and leading research initiatives. The incumbent will formulate strategies to enhance women's participation in the green economy and entrepreneurship, coordinate flagship policy initiatives, and provide technical assistance to partners. This position requires a strong commitment to gender equality and the ability to engage with various stakeholders to drive policy dialogue and capacity-building initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Feminist Economist include overseeing the development of programs related to feminist economics, providing thought leadership and research on gender-responsive economic reforms, and formulating strategies to scale up reforms in unpaid care and women's economic participation. The incumbent will coordinate the implementation of flagship policy initiatives, oversee a network of gender economists, and produce knowledge and communication products. Additionally, the role involves providing technical assistance to partners, leading policy dialogue initiatives, and supporting national consultants in integrating gender into economic policies. The incumbent will also develop and deliver training modules, conduct capacity-building initiatives, and establish strategic partnerships with stakeholders to promote gender-responsive economic policies.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of gender and economic policy, with the ability to design and deliver training and capacity-building strategies. Excellent drafting skills are essential for producing knowledge products for diverse audiences. The role requires experience in using macroeconomic technical tools and the ability to produce impactful communications materials. Strong networking skills and the ability to engage with donors and analyze trends are also necessary. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in qualitative and quantitative policy research and possess excellent analytical skills for writing policy papers and briefings.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, development economics, feminist economics, or a relevant field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A project/programme management certification, such as PMP®, PRINCE2®, or MSP®, is considered an added advantage.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 7 years of international experience in promoting policy reform in gender and economics, including macroeconomic policy and women's economic empowerment. Proven experience in gender analysis of the economy and strategic planning is essential. Previous professional experience in developing and emerging economies, particularly in West and Central Africa, is an asset. Experience in leading personnel in international settings and proficiency in office software packages are required. Familiarity with the UN System and modern web-based ERP systems, preferably Oracle Cloud, is desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is desirable.
