Job Overview: The Feminist Economist position at UN Women involves overseeing the development of programs aimed at promoting gender-responsive economic reforms in West and Central Africa. The incumbent will provide thought leadership and lead research initiatives to support gender equality and women's empowerment (GEWE) in the region. Key responsibilities include formulating strategies to enhance women's participation in the green economy, entrepreneurship, and other economic policies. The role requires coordination of flagship policy initiatives, technical assistance to partners, and capacity-building support to country offices and stakeholders. The position demands collaboration with various teams within UN Women and external partners to ensure effective implementation of gender-responsive economic policies and initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Feminist Economist include: overseeing the development of programs related to feminist economics; providing thought leadership and conducting research on gender-responsive economic reforms; formulating strategies to scale up reforms on unpaid care and women's economic participation; coordinating flagship policy initiatives; overseeing the network of gender economists in UN Women country offices; producing knowledge and communication products; providing technical assistance to partners; leading policy dialogue initiatives; supporting national consultants in developing gender-integrated economic strategies; delivering training modules and capacity-building activities; establishing strategic partnerships; designing regional advocacy strategies; and ensuring knowledge sharing and dissemination of best practices across country offices.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong understanding of gender and economic policy, with the ability to design and deliver training and capacity-building strategies in these areas. Excellent drafting skills are essential for producing various knowledge products tailored to different audiences. The role requires experience in applying macroeconomic technical tools, producing impactful communications materials, and advocating for gender-responsive economic policies. Strong networking skills and the ability to engage with donors and analyze trends are also necessary. Candidates should demonstrate analytical skills and the ability to write policy papers and briefings, along with knowledge of program development and results-based management.
Educational Background: A Master's degree or equivalent in economics, development economics, feminist economics, or a relevant field of economics or public policy is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A project/programme management certification, such as PMP®, PRINCE2®, or MSP®, is considered an added advantage.
Experience: Candidates should have at least 7 years of international experience in promoting policy reform related to gender and economics, including macroeconomic policy and women's economic empowerment. Proven experience in gender analysis of the economy, as well as program and policy analysis, is essential. Experience in developing and emerging economies, particularly in West and Central Africa, is an asset. The role also requires experience in leading personnel in international settings and proficiency in using office software and web-based management systems. Familiarity with the UN system and modern web-based ERP systems, preferably Oracle Cloud, is desirable.
Languages: Fluency in English and French is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish, is considered desirable.
