Job Overview:
The position of National Translating/Interpreting/Proofreading Consultant at UN Women involves providing high-quality translation, interpretation, and proofreading services primarily focused on gender equality and women's empowerment. The consultants will be responsible for translating documents from Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BHS) into English and vice versa, ensuring that the translations maintain the original meaning and nuances. Additionally, the consultants will provide interpretation services, including simultaneous, consecutive, and whispered interpretation, as well as proofreading services in English. The role requires a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality. The consultants will work under the supervision of designated programme and communications staff, with overall oversight from the Programme Management Specialist and Country Representative. This consultancy is home-based, with the possibility of travel within Bosnia and Herzegovina as needed, and the consultants will be engaged under a retainer contract, allowing for flexible engagement based on need and availability.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the National Translating/Interpreting/Proofreading Consultants include:
  • Providing high-quality translation services from BHS into English and from English into BHS, ensuring accuracy and fidelity to the original text.
  • Conducting quality checks on translations and proofreading English texts to ensure language excellence.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of original texts and translated materials throughout the process.
  • Implementing comments and corrections as necessary to improve the quality of translations.
  • Offering high-quality interpretation services in various formats, including simultaneous, consecutive, and whispered interpretation.
  • Delivering proofreading services in English to ensure clarity and correctness of documents.
  • Following specific assignments that outline the nature and scope of work, deliverables, timeframes, and expected outcomes.
  • Collaborating with UN Women staff and other consultants to ensure effective communication and project delivery.
  • Adhering to UN Women’s policies and procedures, including maintaining professional standards and ethical conduct.

Required Qualifications:
The required qualifications for the National Translating/Interpreting/Proofreading Consultants include:
  • Excellent writing skills in both Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and English, with a strong command of grammar, style, and nuances of the languages.
  • Proven ability to provide translating, interpreting, and proofreading services with a high standard of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of international affairs and UN Women’s focus areas, particularly in gender equality and women's empowerment.
  • A high level of concentration and attention to detail, ensuring that all work meets the required standards.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and maintain productivity without compromising quality.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with others and learn from feedback and experiences.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature or a Bachelor’s degree with a Certified Court Interpreter (English) certification. Additional training in relevant areas, particularly related to gender issues, is considered an asset and may enhance the candidate's qualifications.

Experience:
Candidates must have at least 10 years of professional experience in translating, interpreting (English/BHS), and proofreading (English). Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in simultaneous, consecutive, or whispered interpretation (English/BHS) is required. At least 2 years of experience in translating, interpreting, or proofreading in development-related issues and gender equality/women's rights is also necessary. A proven track record of written translation in topics related to gender equality and women's rights is essential, and experience delivering services to UN and/or international organizations is an asset.

Languages:
Written and verbal fluency in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and English is mandatory for this position. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in both languages to ensure effective communication and accurate translation.

Additional Notes:
This consultancy position is home-based, with the potential for travel within Bosnia and Herzegovina as required. The duration of contracts can vary from one day to a maximum of three years, with payments made as specified in the contract upon satisfactory delivery of services. Entry into the expert roster system does not guarantee a contract with UN Women; consultants will be contacted directly based on their experience when a request for services arises. A specific Terms of Reference will outline the outputs for each assignment, and conditions may be negotiable.
