Job Overview:
The Communications Expert will play a crucial role in supporting UN Women in the planning, coordination, and execution of media-related activities focused on the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This position involves developing and implementing a comprehensive communication plan that raises awareness about the importance of the WPS agenda at both local and national levels. The consultant will be responsible for creating engaging content for various media platforms, supporting campaign events, and ensuring effective advocacy for women's participation in peacebuilding and decision-making processes. The role requires close collaboration with UN Women staff and partners, including IOM and UNFPA, to promote women's leadership and address the specific needs of women in conflict and post-conflict situations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop a detailed WPS communications implementation plan that aligns with project outputs, covering partnerships with non-traditional stakeholders, arts and culture initiatives, youth engagement, media campaigns, and dialogues. Monitor progress against the workplan and provide regular updates for internal reports.
  • Support communication and visibility for partnerships between women-led civil society organizations and institutions contributing to the WPS agenda. Develop messaging and materials that promote inclusive narratives and strengthen partners' capacities.
  • Create and coordinate the production of WPS communication products, including social media content, human-interest stories, factsheets, and advocacy materials.
  • Support and amplify WPS media campaigns and public outreach actions, liaising with media partners to promote responsible reporting on WPS themes.
  • Track and document communication outputs and prepare monthly progress reports summarizing activities and challenges. Contribute to a final consolidated report documenting reach, media coverage, and lessons learned.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess a Master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field such as international development, gender studies, or social science. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. The candidate must have at least 5 years of demonstrated work experience in communications, including media relations, and at least 2 years of experience managing media campaigns and online outreach. Experience in producing communication materials and using web editing tools and social media platforms is also required. Knowledge of gender issues and experience working with women will be considered an asset, as will previous experience within the UN system.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree may be accepted with additional qualifying experience. The educational background should ideally include studies related to international development, gender studies, or social sciences, which are relevant to the role's focus on gender equality and women's empowerment.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in communications, with a strong emphasis on media relations. At least 2 years of experience in managing media campaigns and online outreach is essential, along with 3 years of experience in producing communication materials for both print and online platforms. Familiarity with web editing tools and social media platforms is also required. Experience in delivering communications services for international development organizations and promoting gender issues will be advantageous.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, and candidates must provide a professional writing sample. Fluency in B/H/S (Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian) is also required. These language skills are essential for effective communication and outreach in the context of the WPS agenda and the local environment.

Additional Notes:
The consultancy is expected to require approximately 5 days of work per month, with an additional 6 days for workplan development and final reporting. Payments will be made monthly upon submission of progress reports and timesheets. The level of remuneration will be based on the UN salary scale. The consultant may need to work from UN Women premises in Sarajevo and will be required to travel to field locations as per the agreed workplan, with all travel expenses covered by UN Women.
