Job Overview:
The Fusion Science Technical Lead will play a pivotal role in coordinating and implementing activities related to fusion science and plasma physics within the IAEA. This position requires a deep engagement with both national and international fusion initiatives, fostering collaboration and facilitating knowledge exchange among Member States. The incumbent will be responsible for shaping the IAEA’s fusion science programme, ensuring that it aligns with global advancements and Member States’ needs. The role encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including serving as a technical expert, managing complex projects, and acting as a scientific secretary for international fusion-related meetings. The Fusion Science Technical Lead will also oversee the preparation of scientific and technical reports, ensuring that the IAEA remains a recognized authority in the fusion scientific community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Fusion Science Technical Lead will be responsible for providing technical expertise to the fusion team, ensuring effective coordination and execution of fusion science and plasma physics activities. Key responsibilities include planning and monitoring research projects, coordinating technical meetings, and serving as co-scientific secretary for the biennial IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. The incumbent will compile and oversee the preparation of technical reports and publications, manage the IAEA Fusion Portal and related databases, and ensure capacity building activities in fusion science. Additionally, the Fusion Science Technical Lead will evaluate research proposals and provide technical advice for cooperation projects, while representing the IAEA at national and international meetings to establish collaborative relationships with scientists and research centers.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Doctorate Degree in Nuclear Fusion, Plasma Physics, or a related field. A minimum of seven years of experience in nuclear fusion, particularly in fusion science and plasma physics, is required. This experience should be gained in both international and national environments. Proven experience in roles such as project manager, researcher, and program developer in fusion research is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of global advancements in fusion science and have a proven track record in managing technical and scientific projects, showcasing strong leadership and organizational skills. Previous participation in IAEA coordinated research projects and technical meetings is desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational requirement for this position is a Doctorate Degree in a relevant field such as Nuclear Fusion or Plasma Physics. This advanced degree is essential to ensure that the candidate possesses the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to effectively contribute to the IAEA’s fusion science programme.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in nuclear fusion, with a focus on fusion science and plasma physics. Candidates should have experience working in both national and international contexts, and familiarity with the operations of national and international organizations or institutes is desirable. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing technical and scientific projects, demonstrating strong leadership and organizational skills.

Languages:
Excellent oral and written command of English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered an asset and may enhance a candidate's application.

Additional Notes:
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $84,672, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance.
