Job Overview:
The Instrumentation Technician position is integral to the IAEA's nuclear verification mission. Reporting to the Team Leader, the technician is responsible for preparing safeguards instrumentation and delivering related services. This role involves the assembly, testing, calibration, evaluation, installation, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation used in nuclear facilities worldwide. The technician will support end users by providing data evaluation and training, as well as assisting in the development and evaluation of new instruments as required. The position requires a proactive approach to ensure the effective implementation and support of non-destructive assay and containment systems used in nuclear safeguards verification activities. The technician will also engage in procurement activities, manage spare parts inventories, and ensure the quality and performance of instrumentation data.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Instrumentation Technician will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
  • Contributing to the effective implementation and support of non-destructive assay and containment systems for nuclear safeguards verification.
  • Assembling, testing, calibrating, installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing safeguards instrumentation for monitoring nuclear material and facility activities globally.
  • Undertaking procurement activities, managing spare parts and inventories, conducting acceptance and burn-in testing, and updating related databases.
  • Reviewing data quality and monitoring instrumentation performance to ensure data availability.
  • Supporting hands-on training on assigned instrumentation at headquarters or in the field.
  • Preparing technical drawings, reports, specifications, and documentation to support instrumentation implementation.
  • Working in areas that may involve exposure to radioactive materials, requiring medical clearance and adherence to radiation safety regulations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess completed secondary education, with additional qualifications in electronics, technical engineering, or information technology being an asset. A minimum of five years of relevant work experience is required, particularly in testing or troubleshooting instrumentation problems in the field. Knowledge of assembling mechanical and electrical instrumentation, electrical design principles, and network-based monitoring instrumentation is essential. Experience with safeguards instrumentation, nuclear material, and nuclear facilities, as well as basic knowledge of the nuclear fuel cycle, is advantageous. Proficiency in writing technical documentation in English is necessary, and knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes completed secondary education. Additional qualifications in electronics, technical engineering, or information technology, such as those obtained from Berufsschule, Associate University degree, or Hoehere Technische Lehranstalt, are considered beneficial and may enhance a candidate's application.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant work experience. This experience should include testing or troubleshooting instrumentation problems in the field, as well as knowledge of assembling mechanical and electrical instrumentation. Familiarity with electrical design principles and network-based monitoring instrumentation is also necessary. Experience with safeguards instrumentation, nuclear material, and nuclear facilities is advantageous, along with a basic understanding of the nuclear fuel cycle. Candidates should also have experience in radiation detection instrumentation and/or computing, which would be beneficial for this role.

Languages:
The mandatory language requirement for this position is excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is considered a valuable asset and may enhance a candidate's profile.

Additional Notes:
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package, including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 59,439, subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance. Employees are entitled to six weeks of annual vacation, a pension plan, and health insurance. The recruitment process is conducted on a local basis, with non-local candidates considered only when no suitable local candidates are identified.
