Job Overview: The Interpreter and Translator (Social Inclusion & Integration) will play a crucial role in supporting individuals displaced from Ukraine by providing essential translation and interpretation services. This position requires a high level of linguistic proficiency in English, Ukrainian, and Hungarian, as well as a deep understanding of the cultural contexts of the individuals being served. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely translations of personal, legal, and educational documents, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to data protection standards. The role also involves facilitating communication between migrants and IOM staff, ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive appropriate referrals to specialized support services. The Interpreter and Translator will work closely with project staff to document services provided and contribute to monitoring and evaluation processes, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of the project.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide unofficial translations of documents obtained by individuals arriving from Ukraine in English, Ukrainian/Russian, and Hungarian.
Ensure timely and accurate translation of personal, legal, educational, and other relevant documents.
Maintain the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive information during the translation process.
Utilize standardized terminology and formatting in line with IOM’s internal guidelines.
Respond to urgent translation needs as prioritized by supervisors or project staff.
Provide interpreting services in English, Ukrainian, and Hungarian for individuals arriving from Ukraine.
Facilitate effective communication between migrants and IOM staff, as well as external service providers.
Interpret accurately and impartially during interviews, consultations, and other interactions.
Ensure cultural sensitivity and respect during interpretation activities. 1
Maintain continuous documentation of services provided and ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and submitted in a timely manner. 1
Archive documents in line with IOM’s data management and confidentiality protocols. 1
Support monitoring and evaluation processes through the provision of accurate service records. 1
Register and manage personal data of service users in compliance with relevant data protection regulations. 1
Collect and process data only as necessary for the provision of services. 1
Ensure secure storage and handling of personal data in compliance with IOM Data Protection Principles. 1
Report any breaches or suspected breaches of data security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security immediately to the supervisor. 1
Participate in relevant data protection training provided by IOM. 1
Compile and share data on services provided, emerging trends, and identified needs on a regular basis. 2
Liaise regularly with Project Assistant and Senior Project Associate. 2

Share field insights, challenges, and feedback to support project planning and improvement. 2
Collaborate to ensure service continuity and adapt to evolving needs of beneficiaries. 2
Escalate operational issues and seek guidance in complex or unclear situations. 2
Refer vulnerable or high-risk cases to appropriate professionals or external organizations providing specialized support within or outside the project framework. 2
Identify and assess cases requiring specialized or urgent assistance. 2
Ensure timely and appropriate referrals in line with IOM's referral pathways and SOPs. 2
Document and follow up on referred cases to ensure support is received. 2
Maintain confidentiality and respect the dignity and autonomy of individuals throughout the referral process.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, Linguistics, Literature, or a related field from an accredited academic institution with 2 years of relevant work experience; or
High school Degree/Certificate with a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience, preferably in interpretation/cultural mediation in the framework of migrants’ assistance.
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Social Sciences, Humanities, Linguistics, or Literature from an accredited institution. Alternatively, candidates with a high school diploma and significant relevant experience (minimum of 4 years) in interpretation or cultural mediation, particularly in the context of migrant assistance, will also be considered. It is essential that the educational qualifications are from recognized institutions, as listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: The position requires experience in interpretation, particularly in contexts involving migrants. Candidates with prior work experience in international humanitarian organizations, non-governmental organizations, or government institutions in multicultural settings will have a competitive advantage. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong understanding of the challenges faced by migrants and possess the ability to navigate complex cultural dynamics effectively.
Languages: Fluency in Ukrainian, English, and Hungarian (both oral and written) is mandatory for this position. Additionally, fluency in Russian is considered a distinct advantage. The selection process will specifically evaluate the proficiency of the required languages, which may include written and/or oral assessments. IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish, but proficiency in these languages is not a requirement for this position.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Hungary will be eligible for consideration.
