Job Posting Organization: The ITER Organization (IO) is a pioneering international project aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of nuclear fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy. Established with the goal of advancing fusion energy research, the organization operates in a multi-cultural environment and encourages diversity among its workforce. The ITER project is a collaboration among multiple countries, and the organization is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace that values the contributions of all individuals, regardless of their background. The ITER Organization is dedicated to creating a sustainable energy future and is actively involved in various scientific and engineering projects that address complex challenges in the field of nuclear fusion.
Job Overview: The Deputy Program Manager position at the ITER Organization offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of an ambitious fusion energy project. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership for the management of ITER's integrated control system architecture (CODAC), ensuring that it aligns with project objectives, safety standards, and operational readiness. This role involves overseeing the Control and Integrated Commissioning Program (CIC), which is responsible for the design, procurement, assembly, installation, and commissioning of ITER control systems. The Deputy Program Manager will play a crucial role in ensuring that the project meets its objectives in terms of scope, cost, schedule, quality, and performance, particularly focusing on Tokamak and plasma control systems. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders and a commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the Deputy Program Manager include defining and managing the CODAC architecture and implementation plan, leading the development of the ITER machine's interlock and protection strategy, and driving the delivery of the necessary network and computer infrastructure for the integrated control system. The Deputy Program Manager will support the Program Manager in setting strategic priorities and fostering integration between the ITER Organization and its Domestic Agencies. Additional responsibilities include participating in the preparation of the integrated commissioning, leading the system commissioning and operation of the integrated control system, ensuring timely delivery of central control systems, providing guidance during the design of in-kind plant control systems, and maintaining compliance with nuclear safety and occupational health standards. The role also involves monitoring project progress, identifying potential issues, and implementing risk mitigation strategies.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess extensive experience in the architecture, design, implementation, and commissioning of nuclear fusion device CODAC systems. A strong understanding of magnetic confinement fusion devices and related machine protection systems is essential. The role requires technical project management experience in nuclear construction, including multi-national collaboration, in-kind procurement, and effective risk and cost management. Candidates should demonstrate inclusive leadership skills and the ability to motivate and develop staff. Desirable qualifications include experience in coordinating complex construction projects, high-level strategic negotiation skills, and the ability to maintain a safe and secure working environment.
Educational Background: A master's degree or equivalent in Engineering, Control, or Nuclear Physics is required for this position. Candidates with extensive professional experience in similar roles or additional training certificates in relevant domains may also be considered. The educational background should align with the technical demands of the role, ensuring that the candidate possesses the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the ITER project.
Experience: The position requires extensive experience in the nuclear fusion sector, particularly in the design and implementation of control systems for fusion devices. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing complex projects within the constraints of human and financial resources. Experience in international collaboration and the ability to navigate multi-national environments are critical for success in this role.
Languages: Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset, particularly for candidates from diverse backgrounds, as the ITER Organization values multilingualism and cultural diversity in its workforce.
