Job Overview: The position of Part-time Language Teacher for Spanish involves preparing and facilitating language lessons that adhere to the United Nations Language Framework (UNLF). The teacher is expected to deliver high-quality courses, maintain up-to-date learning materials, and provide timely feedback on assignments. The role requires collaboration with the UNOV/UNODC administration team and involves monitoring student progress, reporting attendance, and administering evaluations to assess learner advancement. Classes are conducted either in-person at the Vienna International Centre (VIC) or online, with a schedule of twice a week for regular courses and once a week for workshops. The expected duration of the contract is up to five months, with potential start dates in March or September 2026, depending on course demand and registration outcomes. The position is part-time, with teachers hired per term based on satisfactory service delivery and demand for future terms.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Part-time Language Teacher for Spanish will undertake a variety of responsibilities under the supervision of the Team Leader of the Talent Development Team (TDT). These include: a) Planning and preparing course plans and lessons that align with the UN Language Framework, ensuring that teaching units are balanced, varied, and current. The teacher will implement curricula as agreed with the Team Leader, adjust lesson plans based on individual student needs, and design task-based activities that utilize authentic resources to develop skills across personal, business, and professional domains. b) Delivering interactive linguistic training, managing class interactions effectively, providing clear instructions, and monitoring both individual and group work. The teacher will also provide constructive feedback and utilize appropriate technology to enhance the learning experience. c) Designing and selecting assessment methods to evaluate learner progress, conducting placement tests, and providing feedback on proficiency in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. d) Gathering feedback from participants and reporting on lessons learned, attendance, and areas for improvement at the end of each term. e) Preparing the learning environment by ensuring all necessary support devices and materials are ready for each class. f) Monitoring and recording student attendance, addressing any attendance issues with the Language Programme policy. g) Contributing to the success of the Language Programme by attending required meetings and collaborating with the administration team to suggest improvements.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication, education/pedagogy, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in similar fields combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted. A minimum of five years of experience teaching Spanish as a foreign or second language is required, with at least three years being recent. Proficiency in using various e-learning tools and online collaboration platforms is essential, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience working with adults in a multicultural environment is desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree in relevant fields such as language studies, linguistics, or education. Additional Notes: The duration of each regular language course is 17 weeks, consisting of two classes per week, each lasting 1.5 hours, totaling 51 hours per course. Workshops are 16 weeks long, with one class per week for one hour, totaling 16 hours. Teachers are compensated at a rate of 50 EUR per hour for both regular courses and workshops. Payment is made in four installments based on the total hours worked. The contract does not include medical insurance or pension benefits. The UNOV/UNODC Language Programme administration team reserves the right to modify course delivery and schedules as necessary.
