Job Overview:
The internship position is designed to provide practical experience in research and project management within the context of the UNODC's operations in Central America and the Caribbean. Interns will work closely with professional staff and will be expected to contribute to various projects, particularly those related to the Global Firearms Programme. The role is full-time, requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week, and is expected to last for six months, starting in January or February 202
  • Interns will gain valuable insights into the workings of the UN, develop their research and analytical skills, and learn about the challenges and strategies involved in addressing firearms trafficking and related issues in the region. This position is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel and living expenses.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will undertake a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: supporting the Global Firearms Programme's activities, assisting in the preparation of workshops and meetings, conducting research on legal documents and firearms issues, contributing to technical documents and reports, performing legal research and analysis, supporting the GFP Community of Practitioners, conducting media reviews on firearms incidents, maintaining the GFP webpage, drafting correspondence, and attending meetings to take notes. Interns may also be required to perform other related tasks as necessary, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to engage in diverse activities.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be enrolled in or have recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required, a field of study closely related to the internship is essential. Applicants must also possess good knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. The ability to draft news articles or social media posts is desirable, as is the ability to design surveys and polls.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor's or equivalent), or enrolled in or have recently completed a Master's or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion must be provided with the application. This educational background ensures that interns have the necessary theoretical knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the UNODC's work.

Experience:
While prior professional work experience is not a requirement for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. This could include research projects, internships, or volunteer work related to international relations, law, public policy, or similar fields. The focus is on candidates who are eager to learn and contribute to the UN's mission.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish is required for this internship, as these are the primary working languages of the UNODC. Knowledge of an additional official UN language, such as French, Arabic, Chinese, or Russian, is considered an advantage and may enhance a candidate's application.
